Progress update on 3mz-Fe engine removal and replacement
melted an electrical connector to the vacuum solenoid and broke the one on the spare harness trying to get the wires out to replace it. Ordered a new one but I individually wrapped the spade connectors in electrical tape and just connected them directly to the solenoid using some more tape to secure the connection. I’m hoping the 30 seconds or less gas fire didn’t damage the wires going to the injectors and coil packs but if it did I can cut and splice that part of the harness from the extra harness I have.
the engine wants to turn over easily. At first we connected the battery and I couldn’t get the car to turn on but realized it’s because I didn’t secure the main ground to the cassis tightly. One thing I’m worried about is the passenger side cv seems like it could go in another 3/32” as there is a small gap between the transfer case and the little silver cap that covers the input opening. Picture attached.
but all in all we are so so close. I ended up spilling about a gallon of the 4 gallon atf shop box. I dropped my impact in it but believe it or not the impact still works!!! I’m going to open it up to clean any residual atf let it drain over night as there is still some coming out of the area on the handle where the battery fits in.
I’m not really surprised it still works as I’ve seen a video where someone dunks a Milwaukee half inch high torque impact into a fish tank and it doesn’t stop running. And they are made by the same company so it’s pretty much the same parts and engineering that went into both products. But it was pretty annoying to have that happen when we are so close to having this rx330 up and running again.
then last night I found some graham crackers to snack on there was nothing else sweet in our apartment but when I went to sit down our rabbits were freaking out and wanted some graham crackers too. Our bunny Felix just went nuts and bit my left hand ring finger super hard and pretty much mangled the edge of my cuticle so now my left hand is at a less than optimal performance capacity. He’s lucky he’s cute I was pretty mad at him but it’s hard to stay mad at such a sweet little friend.

Looks like you got this, gl!
But when someone says it’s just a flesh would I think of Monty python and the holy grail who were probably referencing that when they made that joke.
what do you think, does my passenger side CV axel look like it’s in enough or should I loosen the axel nut and smack the ever loving fecal matter out of it with a dead blow?
Need to button some things up still. I regretfully decided to leave the power steering pump that came with the salvaged engine on and it is shot. Now I need to swap it for the reman that came with the engine we pulled out. The moon roof and the window controls on the driver door for the rest of the car don’t work but the lock and the drivers side window control works. The horn also doesn’t work. Need to finish fastening on the bumper and the fender liners. The automatic window close and open only works on the driver side. And I need one or two new camshaft position sensors but other than that it runs and starts up nice.

2 I tackled today quite easily. One was a camshaft position sensor code but when I was under the car today I saw an electrical connection that didn’t get plugged in. Figured out quick it was the bank one camshaft position sensor. Took the plenum and air box out and hooked it back up. Then I swapped out the power steering pump with the remanufactured one that came with the car because I stupidly left the one that came with the salvaged engine on thankfully that fixed the complete lack of power steering.
but now besides having a battery that won’t hold the charge I have an ABS light on which is triggering the VSC light and I have a P0037 code. Idk what is causing the abs code. I just switched the pads and sanded the rotors with a right angle sander and some 80 grit a couple weeks before the rod knock started. But the car sat on jack stands with no front wheels in it for a couple months. Also the horn is not working but that’ll be an easy thing to figure out. But I admit I’m a little stumped on the ABS at the moment.
the car turned over this morning but the battery light came on and then the dashboard instrument cluster lights just died and came on and died a few times but the tachometer kept functioning while that was happening. Then we turned the car off and it wouldn’t start again. Had triple a come and jump it and they told me the alternator is good but the battery was just under 10v but I checked it 15 minutes after they left with my little craftsman obd and the battery was jumping back and forth between 7.1 and 6.8v so I need a new battery for sure.

P0037 is a CEL code for a Bank 1 Sensor 2 Heater Element, which is easy enough to check, just measure the voltage between two Black wires when the Ignition is in the ON position, and then check the resistance of the sensor. With that, the thing is that this code must trigger a CEL light, VSC light always comes on together with CEL as part of a design for those cars, check that the light bulb is intact.
Not all generic scan tools are capable of reading codes beyond what's mandated by OBD2 standard, and ABS system is not part of it. Some parts stores should be able to rent you a scan tool capable of reading ABS codes for free, you will just have to ask around. If you won't be able to find a scan tool nearby to use, the cheapest way to read the codes would likely be to get a Techstream cable, which is an all around good tool to own if you know how to use it and planning on keeping a car for a while.
As for the battery, ask a local Toyota dealership, they tend to sell those for surprisingly reasonable prices, at least around here, not to mention the honor that comes with OEM Toyota badge even on the battery.

Hope this helps and best of luck!
