Default 05 330 hatch remote

When I use the remote to open the hatch, it reverses without any apparent cause. Seemed random and I checked cold, level, pushing the button accidentally but none of those things seem to be the problem. I can open it manually without problem . Anybody else have this issue? Any insights are greatly appreciated. Thanks!

The gas struts that are on each side of the hatch are worn out and need to be replaced. The motor for raising the hatch is not powerful enough to lift the hatch by itself. The struts act as a counter-balancing spring to make the hatch lighter for the motor.

Yes it will be the struts. Also need to change quickly as it can result in an accident where the tailgate could come down without notice, due to failing struts and somebody can get hurt.

Ask me how I know, the hood on my RX330 fell down on me due to a failed hood strut. For a $30 item, prevention is a cure for a potential open wound.

The struts on my hatch are failing also. Since it only happens when the temperature gets down around 35º, I'm procrastinating until it gets a bit warmer.

As long as you are aware that the hatch can fall on your heard...keep safe.

Thank you, I appreciate the warning. However this isn't my first introduction to gas struts, through. I go way back to the 80's having hoods fall on my head.

Default Hatch struts

The one thing I feel is s major design flaw with this car is that there is not an automatic reverse if the hatch hits an obstacle. With that said I had enough of trying to jump out of the way before getting bonked, bought the parts that my mechanic put on for me. The new struts are a great improvement over the old even if discounting the hazard potential. Thanks for all the comments.
