I had the same issue, just replaced the struts. The Lexus dealership wanted $560. I had it done at Belle tire for $170 and it works fine now.

Had the rear struts go 4 years ago on my '04 Sequoia and got the struts at Bennett Auto Supply for $25. Good quality too. You don't realize how dang heavy those hatch doors are until you remove those two struts!

Make sure you replace struts as a pair. A step ladder and phone books will hold hatch up while you work on it.

I purchased our new struts for the liftgate from liftsupportsdepot.com and using a 10mm socket and box-end wrench, and about 45 minutes, completed the task for $39. They carry a lifetime warranty and have a clip that will make future replacements a ~15 minute process.

What type of struts should I purchase? Mine has started to exhibit the behaviour of starting to open and then shuts itself almost immediately. Other times it works fine. I think a decent breeze causes it to not open fully (strangely I never had these issues with my 2003 [2004 to you US guys] RX330).

There are struts on Ebay that have worked fine for me....good luck.
