Default Need help replacing glove box latch and lock

Hi folks,
I need help to take the glove box apart on Lexus RX 330, 2004.

I have been able to remove the glove box. But for the life of me cannot figure out how to remove the front cover to get to the latch and lock. I see that these are separately orderable parts. So the glove box must come apart somehow.

I do not want to order a whole glove box just to replace a $20 part. Please help.

Yes. Few old links pointing to Sewell Lexus which are gone.

Nothing on youtube or other channels not for my model, that I can use as a guide.

From an earlier post...hope this helps!

Thanks Mandyfig

Before I got your message, I managed to find a useful writeup (actually about installing an Ipod adapter), but gave good pointers on how to remove the glovebox and surround

http://lexus.sewellparts.com/pdf/PT54500082_rx.pdf

my tips:
a. undo the 2 screws along the top edge of glovebox. Let the glovebox unit stay, held in place by the 3 top clips (good Lexus engineering design!)

b. remove the horizontal trimpiece under the glovebox (3 pinch clips at front then it slides forward)

c. remove the door trim piece (with Lexus nameplate), just enough to reach the 10mm bolt holding the lower corner of the glovebox unit.

d. undo the 10mm on the opposite lower corner (near transmission tunnel)

e. Unclip the wiring harness for the tailgate switch, then you can pull out the whole glovebox unit!

Default latch and lock replacement instructions

Hi folks,
Sewell Lexus Parts is gone and with it treasure trove of useful information.
I think removing the glove box as a whole is well documented, if anybody has any issues PM me.

Latch: Latch mechanism is behind the plastic label in the glove box. Use a thin screwdriver to gently pry it from the top. Do not apply a lot force it should pop right out. It has two "legs" and a latch. If you have to use force you are prying on the wrong part.
This gives you access to two screws. after removing these latch should come off. Be careful of the spring it may fall off and then you will spend time to figure out how it was attached in the first place.
Latch is easily replaceable.

Lock: I hope you never have to replace this part, because there is truly no good was to get to it. I wound out breaking the front (leather covered) panel off the velvet/plastic back. It seems to be glued or cold welded in place. Starting with the bottom of the box. Pry up using screw driver. The seams will separate relatively cleanly. This will separate front and back pieces and give you access to the 2 screws which hold the lock in place. I found no other way to get to it.

The box is made from poly prop/eth blend. It is a pain to glue together. I used J-B plastic bonder epoxy. It is the only glue in Home depot capable of handling this type of plastic.
Clamp well but use wood or some other flat material to spread the force of the clamp, otherwise you will leave ugly marks on your glove box.

The glove box is back on the car and now works.

Good luck. This is relatively poorly designed on the part of the lexus.

Update on my Water leak:

Originally everybody believed the Water Leak was coming from my Windshield on passenger side. Believe it or not, I was on my way to the Lexus Dealer and a ************ rock hit my Windshield. So not only was I bringing my car in to find my leak, now I need whole new Windshield! So only good part of that is we can hopefully eliminate the Windshield is not leaking again.

Windshield was replaced yesterday, also had my Brakes done, Tires, oil change. Got a new loaner, 2020 ES-350 with only 6 miles.

Lexus dealer called me today and they said the water is coming in around the Passenger Door Mirror area, they advised I would need to replace 3 different moldings/Seal.. Do not know what ones they are replacing, but it must be a job since this repair is $500.00. They had 2 Technicians on the water testing. I did not talk with the Techs, the service advisor called me.

As soon as I get the part#s they are replacing, I will post them. Does anybody know what seal/moulding would allow water to get to Junction Block? Guesses?

I could have said no to the water repair, but I cannot drive a car that continues to have electrical issues...43K miles on this car, cannot afford to purchase a new one.

We are expecting over 3 inches of rain in Charlotte, NC, told the service advisor to make sure my car get put in the shop!

Stay tuned!

Hi Mujininzoo,

For sure frustration, I do not like the fact my car has been hanging at the car dealership almost 4 weeks from my 3 trips to the dealership. I keep posting to hopefully get an answer/fix so others do not have to go through the horror show!

Thanks!

okay I have let the spring fall out and now I have no clue where it goes 😅. Any help is appreciated, i got my handle on and the metal pin into the arm and working but I have this spring that I don't know where it fits in but I'm sure it goes to the latch in the middle since that latch is stationary now while it's supposed to be moving to grab the hook to keep glove box closed
