I guess there must be a leak in the system then? How much will it be to fix it on average

Take your car to a shop and have the A/C system evacuated and recharged and have dye injected into the system. Give it about a week and go back to the shop and they'll be able to pinpoint the source of the leak. Without knowing where the leak is there is no way to even guess at cost of repair. If it's the evaporator core it will be well over $1k. If it's a leaking valve core it could be $5.
