Default TPMS Finally figured it out!!

All,

My TPMS light went on at the beginning of the year and I reset it and it would reset most of time and that seemed to work. After 7-8 years I figured it was the sensors themselves. I had purchased sensors before for another car and had them replaced, no problem the car learned the sensor and the light went out (SL500). I purchase the Lexus sensors for $45ea. I called the tire place and they wouldn't do it this time, I had to buy their sensors for $150 ea. installed. So I installed them myself as I have the equipment, tire changer and high speed balance machine. I change all 5 (spare), press the button and light still on.

The answer is: You have to put the new codes back into the TPMS ECU. No other way to do it. Dealer can do it and some tire places if they are good and have the "simple" equipment". I did a few searches and purchase two items from Amazon. Lights out, OH joy!! If the tire place says just push the button and drive 20 min they are wrong. If you do go to a tire place make them show you the equipment and explain how they have to get the TPMS codes from each sensor and then connect to the OBDII and upload the codes. As I said, no other way.

Good Luck,
David

Most folks can't do a DIY on TPMS sensors, they don't have the equipment or expertise. The best place I have found to purchase, install and program new TPMS sensors is the Costco tire shop. Very inexpensive compared to other places.

I agree!! Unfortunately, the Costco's around me do not do TPMS sensors. The dealer and tire service places were just too expensive. And I was tired of getting the runaround of just push the button. With the TPMS equipment purchase I probably broke even. I was going to spend it anyway at least I have the equipment now.

Default TPMS battery replacement at Costco

Recently, I went to the Costco to have all four tires replaced on my 2008 RX350. The TPMS lights been on for about a month (I tried to reset and check the tire pressure also) and I mentioned to the tire tech that the TPMS light is on after seeing an advertisement for TPMS sensor check up for $14.95. The tech said the TPMS sensor batteries usually last 5-7 years and he will check the TPMS sensor for me. He called me later that day and said he can replace the batteries for $10 per wheel, including the spare tire. So for $64.95 ($50 for five batteries + $14.95 for diagnosis), I had all five TPMS batteries replaced and problem solved without replacing the sensor.

I know some of the folks on the forum indicated that the batteries are not serviceable. I also thought the same but Costco apparently has the ability to replace the batteries and reset the TPMS system at a fraction of the cost.
