Default Groan when opening rear hatch door

Hi All,
I've previously asked this question but didn't resolve it. Does anyone else have this problem with the rear hatch door? My 2008 RX seems to issue a groan whenever I first open the rear hatch in the morning. If I use the power or remote opener, no noise, but when I manually open it, I get a groan from the left side of the door. I suspect it's the motor releasing but not sure. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Bob

I would check your lift struts to see if they are leaking. Iirc, the lift motor does the work of raising and lowering and, when it does this, it takes the stress off of struts. The other thing you might do is to remove the lift strut and see if you can push it in by hand. If you can, that unit is bad. They do fail.

Hi Trebbor,
I have similar issue, but not exact - if it's cold outside (winter time) rear door sometimes groans when opened by motor or manually.
Didn't figure it out yet.

Bad lift struts. Very easy to replace.

Thanks, all. I will order some new struts and see what happens. I'll post the results so that someone else can benefit from the collective wisdom.

+1 on the link. I bought mine from them and just asked the guy doing the oil change to replace them for free.
