Default Costco says TPMS replacement common with new tires?

2008 Lexus RX350. Was putting on a set of new all-season's Michelle LX4's.

Hey guys, I just searched a few threads around "Costco and TPMS" and didn't notice anything about my particular problem.

Seems like Costco broke one of my TPMS units and then replaced it with one from a spare tire. They are claiming that the nice time I was going to fill air, the TPMS unit would have broken anyway and that this is common.

The remedy? They will install the TPMS for me for free if I pick up another sensor from Lexus.

Thoughts? I was wondering if I have a claim to have Costco also pay for the new TPMS unit.

Well they broke it and they should pay for the replacement. Talk to the Tire Manager. But do it nicely. You should be OK.

So sounds like their answer of "these things always break" or "this would have broken anyway" are BS?

Costco replaced all four of my tires and didn't break anything. It sounds like they are feeding you a bunch of BS.

I had to replace a tire (which I bought on-line at Discounttiredirect). The old one was removed and the new one installed without any mention of TMPS, and there was no breakage or damage or any other issue (simultaneous or subsequent) from the installation of the new tire. Costco screwed up ('a technical term') and they are trying to cover up.

It does not matter if the sensor was going to eventually break, it was not broken when you brought the car in. CostCo should pay for everything. I've never had issues with CostCo's service. Make you case and you should be OK.

Like others have said....they should pay for it (replacement and re-program).

How did they break it?

When i've bought new tires, i've always just had them "rebuild" the TPMS, since its about $3 each.

The place I do my tires, which does an excellent job, has a little sign on the desk saying the TPMS sensors are not covered if they break. They have changed my tires twice a year for 4 years without breaking one.

So, yes you can replace tires without breaking them.

And, yes, they must be breakage prone, since they have the sign.

TPMS sensor is just much more than $3 each. Even after market one for RX is about $15 to $20. Then you need to regisater it into the computer that monitors the car. Deal charges that $50 or more for one time. So breaking one coould cost you more than $70 once.

An alternative is to not use TPMS as long as you are OK with the tire pressure indicator always on.

I'm talking about a rebuild kit which ( I believe) includes new washers, o- rings and lock nuts which can cause air to leak if they are worn or damaged. I agree, New TPMS sensor are crazy expensive
but they don't just "break". Someone would have to be really careless or the TPMS sensor itself was defective. BTW.....I buy my tires from Discount Tires as of lately because they price match (even Costco prices) and they re-program TPMS for FREE!!
