when to rebuild TPMS?
Hi guys,
I was at Discount Tire getting my Bridgestone Turanza Serenity tires and they told me that i have to buy the TPMS Rebuild Kit or else. I told him to take it off, but he insisted that i must or else hell will freeze over. Do you guys buy TPMS Rebuild Kit everytime you change tires? BTW, it is $40 for TPMS.
thanks,

the rebuild kit for TPMS is for new valve stems and caps etc. It also has some hardware to re-seat the sensor on the rim, but you dont really need it if they are just swapping out the tires. Only if your replacing rims and moving the TPMS sensors to a new rim. Its a 40.00 pure profit deal for them and I have questioned it on almost every new set I have purchased. I actually like putting new stems in as they get bent over time with adding air etc, its not a bad idea, but not absolutely necessary to replace your tires.

Yes, Discount Tire was doing that a couple of years ago saying Lexus required it but I just had them mount some tires last week and there was no mention of the TPMS rebuild kit. I actually thought they were replacing good parts with lesser quality parts and charging for it an was glad they stopped doing it. I would try another Discount Tire or maybe even another tire dealer.
My Lexus dealer has never mentioned the TPMS rebuild but won't mount tires that they didn't sell.

on their website they offer it as an option... they already include valve stems so the kit looks like a profit only item for them

I hate to bring up an old thread but I think i'm having an issue with a leaking valve stem. Though the rebuild kit from the dealership is $10 each. It's also the same part number for most toyota's . Were they charging you $40 for all 4 installed? if so that's not a bad deal. But yeah when replacing wheels and transfering sensors it isn't a bad idea to get a rebuild kit.

$20 ain't bad, amazon has the kits for $7 each..plus, if you do have an issue with them, at least you have some recourse..I have dealt with Discount for about 20 years now and they always came through for me.

I dont think you need it but $40 is a lot cheaper than the $600+ dollars I was quoted at Bell Lexus in Phoenix for a set of 4. No you didnt read that wrong. These idiots ( who cant even put a door panel back on the right way ) wanted to rip me off by charging me more than $600 for 4 TPMS. I called discount tire and they said for brand new ones through them it was like 100 plus tax. Just one of the many reason I will never give any business to that crappy outfit Bell lexus. They guy at Discount thought it was a mistake but then I should the estimate sheet and about fell out laughing. Discount tire imho does good and honest work. If it was me and it was just $40 I would give them the money
