What year is your RX? On my 2008 I just stuck my hand through the hole underneath the foglights and up to get to the back of the housing to remove/replace the bulbs.

 

I just installed an HID Conversion Kit for my head lights and fog lights in my 2007 RX350. To get to the fog light on the passenger side, I simply stuck my hand through the slit located underneath the fog light. For the driver side fog light, the slit has a piece of plastic behind it so you cant stick you hand in it. Instead, I just removed the battery and you get a open view and plenty of space to just reach down and pull the fog light out.

 

You can reach both from inside the engine compartment. The right side is pretty easy. I believe I had to remove the windshield washer refill tube to be able to reach down, but this is an easy removal. The left side is a little more difficult and it pays to have a smaller forearm. You have to remove the battery bracket and force your arm down through the hole that it creates. You can shimmy the battery back an inch or so. I'm about 180 pounds and it was a tight fit.

The other way to get to the foglights is through the wheel well by removing the front trim piece in the well. I have not done this but others have said they have and they said it was not difficult.

I bought some LED 9005 LED lamps with the CREE led bulb at the tip hoping to use them as DRL's and high beam lights but unfortunately they were not bright enough, so instead I modified the ends so they can fit a 9006 socket and use them as fog lights instead of sending them all the way back to China. Although 9005 usually have a higher wattage than the 9006 I figured that since it's an LED it would draw less power anyway.

I don't have skinny arms and both sides were a PITA to access. Passenger side I had to go under the vehicle. There was no way I could access it from the top. The driver side I had no choice but to stick my hand through the top, move the battery and then feel my way around.

I'm satisfied with the results. The fogs have a bluish tint instead of the blandish yellow from the halogen bulb.

To put in HIDs in my fogs, I simply undid some of the plastic underneath and undid some from the wheel well, making them very accessible. I think I had to remove 2 screws and about 5 clips on each side. If you have never messed with things like this before, it would take probably about a half an hour per side to disassemble, change bulbs, and reassemble everything properly.

 

Hey thanks Trebbor for the document. I'll keep it for future reference in case if I need to removing the fog light housing.

As for just changing a bulb, that is way too much work. I wound up sticking my hand under the passenger side and through the top for the driver side. Took a while and a few scratches because I have big arms, but was able to do it. I wonder why Lexus didn't make this more accessible or is it the fact that they didn't want people poking around in there?

 

It is a lot of work just to change a bulb. I tried getting to them from the engine compartment, but I apparently have too big forearms to really get in there, so I had to get to both from underneath.

Toyota really doesn't like people messing around with their fog lights it seems. On almost every newer Toyota, the fog lights are really hard to get to. I suppose they do this so that you have to take your car to a shop (which for most is the dealership) to get it done, as most people don't want to spend an hour to figure out how to change out their fog light bulbs. I must say it is incredibly annoying to have to go through all this trouble just to change out a couple of light bulbs.

 

I also have a 2008 RX350 and was able to replace the passenger side fog lamp through the opening under the bumper. It wasn't easy, especially putting the new bulb back into the opening for the fog lamp assembly.
