Default 30 K Service

I just did the 30K service on my 2004 RX330. The dealer wanted $800, but that included changing all the fluids. I just did what the manual said, it cost less than $60 using parts from Park Place Lexus in TX. It took less than 2 hours, and I was slow. No problems, but have a few questions regarding the Lexus Parts:
Oil Filter, Part# 90915-YZZD3 was removed, and 90915-YZZD1 was what Park Place Lexus sent me. After looking at them, the D3 is a larger filter, and probably a better choice, but the D1 is what is listed, so I installed it. Any explanation would be appreciated.
Oil Capacity- listed as 5 quarts with filter, but after filling, the dipstick level was 1/4 in below top mark. Should the capacity be 5.5 qts?

Air Filter, Part # 17801-20040 was removed, and 17801-0H010 was installed. They looked the same, so why a different number.

Cabin Air Filter, could not read the part number off the old one, but the new one was 87139-YZZ03. They were different, but the filter element looked the same. Is this just an updated part?

Thanks for any information.

I recently had my local Lexus dealer do my 30k service. I knew it would be expensive but I wanted the major detail done by them. I brought the car in and got a 2007 RX for a loaner. They replaced all the fluids and filters as I expected. They did the carpet clip recall. They replaced my brake rotors and pads as they felt they were starting to show warpage. I also found that my gas tank, which was pretty low when I brought it in, was now full. The inside and outside was spotless. This service cost was around $500, certainly what I would consider a fair price for all that was done.

If I'd have done this 30k service myself I'd have not detected the need for new rotors and pads. Just reinforces why I like to have the dealership handle the major service intervals.

I bet you had the work done in Wisconsin and not Florida for $500. The dealers in So Florida have built palacial service facilities and are not that reasonably price IMO.

Yup! Wisconsin it was. I did have some service done by Scanlon Lexus in Fort Myers in the past and it was reasonable. That was two years ago though.

Wonder what Toyota would charge for a 30k for the Lexus? Has anyone done this? Surely the warrenty would be valid since it's their company.

I wanted to have the service done at the new Newport Lexus dealer, so went there for the recall, and had them try to fix a rattle and the shimmy of the front wheels. I asked them for the price of the 30K service, and they gave me a sheet of everything they did and an estimate of $800. However, I wasn't happy with their service work they did, so decided to do the 30K service myself. The dealer wanted to change all the fluids, but the manual only says change the break fluid at 30K. So if you only do what the manual says, even $500 is a lot. I also have a nephew who is a liscensed Toyota mechanic and says the Toyota 30k service is about $300.

According to Edmunds, the 30K service should be about $159.75. Is this wrong?

Here's the breakdown:

The Edmunds list of what is required does not match what is in my owners manual supplement. Things like an engine coolant change for example is missing from the Edmunds list. Also, If you have an AWD and pull a trailer occasionally other fluid replacements are needed according to my owners manual. Edmunds doesn't address that at all.

Not suggesting that the cost couldn't be lower, just that the Edmunds list is sorely lacking and couldn't be used to get warranty claims covered..

I believe the manufacturers owners manual trumps Edmunds. In case of a major warranty claim down the road, Edmunds won't be paying the bill for you. The manufacturer could simply point to their owners manual and say you didn't follow the maintenance requirements, sorry.

Well Edmunds list is not sorely lacking, but a little lacking in that the manual says replace the cabin air filter, the engine air filter and replace the brake fluid. Since mine was a 2WD and I don't tow a trailer, I didn't have the extra stuff for that. If you added the list cost of the cabin air filter, the air filter, and changing the brake fluid, it wouldn't add more than $100, so $260 should be reasonable. By the way, my radiator has a sticker on it put on by Lexus that says the fluid is good for 160,000 km or 100,000 miles, so that doesn't need to be changed. I think the dealers are just padding the tasks to collect more money.

Before any work is done, the customer is given an estimate and the work is authorized to be performed. For any additional work (not authorized at drop off) the shop is required to get permission over phone. All these steps are required to obtain a mechanics lien. A practise much better than when you go to a dentists office.

You are at liberty to question any work item listed on the work order. You should insist on reducing the list down to manufactureres reccomended items and do not forget to add the exras which may relate to your driving conditions.

For the oil change, drive the vehicle around for about 30 minutes after doing it. Let the engine cool for about an hour and then check the oil level. Sometimes, I get similar issues with my RX300 and oil is something I am careful not to overfill.

Part numbers can be updated (even if you can't tell any difference with the design) and I have seen this over my years with the RX300, including the air filter and ignition coils, among other things. Thus, I would have no doubt this could apply to the RX330.

I am also getting close to 30K service for my 04 RX. Should I do it myself?

Wow,...that's hard to believe $500 for all that....just replacing the rotors and pads alone will cost you $500 (labor and parts). Perhaps, you meant meant to say $1,500 total??
