Default oil filter - how tight?

Okay, it's been a while since I've done a car with a screw on filter... How tight should the new filter be tightened on the RX 330? If already tightened too much and driven a hundred miles or so, is it okay to back it out and properly tighten? or should a new filter be installed?

After the seal touches its only a half a turn more and from my experience on my camry it should be ok to back out the filter and then hand tighten it again. but just check if you still have enough oil.

Oh yeah where is the filter on this car. I just got it about 7 weeks ago???

Also what type of oil do you use?

Thanks.

The oil cap says 5w30 but my dealership has been using 10w30. I went with Castrol Syntec Blend 5w30 as several folks seem to use this in their RX 330s.

5W-30 is best ... API Service " SM " or better, if possible

I grease the gasket seal with bearing grease, prior to installing. Hand finger tight without strain, then wrench an additional quarter to half turn.

Tightened too much is doubtful; I'd leave it till your next change. Just check the filter when removed, insuring the gasket didn't stick to the engine.

I agree with Tammy, leave it be till next oil change. If there was leak you would have known it by now.

If you overtighten the rubber oring gets squeezed so much that the metal of the filter starts touching the metal of the engine block extension ... you no longer get a seal.

I put dab of fresh oil on the oring and smear it all aound. Spin the filter on till the surfaces meet and then go 3/4 of turn by hand. I do not like to use wrench to tighten the filter.

The above applies to the metal encapsulated filter. I thought 350 uses pleated filter (60's style) inside a reusable metal cup.

Oil weight should be 5W-30. I would venture that just maybe the manufacturer knows what is best for your car. In your manual, there should be alternate oils for severe conditions. For instance, if you leave in TX and never see cool temps, I think the manual says 10W-30 is OK.

Oil filter is located behind the exhaust collector. When your engine is cool, feel under the exhaust manifold and you will be able to feel the filter. Once you know where it is you can slip an oil filter cap socket on the end and take it off with a 3/8" drive.

Favorite oil? I call this question the Baskin Robbins question. Vanilla, strawberry or chocolate? I use Mobil 1 exclusively in my RX, in my Legend, and in my Mustang. However, any name brand of oil is acceptable that meets the same API standard (American Petroleum Institute) that is required by the manufacturer. Imho, synthetic is overkill but I like it for its cold/cool weather pour-ability. Is that a word?

PERFECT on the tightness of the filter!! I use the fresh oil to lube my seal though

You are okay using a 10W30. The thing to avoid for now is a W40 or a W50. I have used both and now use a 0W40 Mobil 1, but I have about 110,000 miles on my RX300.

I think I remember looking up on Mobil 1´s website once and seeing that for my vehicle it recommend both 5W30 or 10W30.
