Default Automatic Wiper problems

Anybody else have major problems with the automatic wiper feature? The dealer has now had my RX in three times with no luck. The first time the wipers didn't come on enough, the next two times they come on even with no rain. Very weird and annoying! Thanks.

I have never had automatic wipers before I got my RX330 a few months ago, and I was disappointed to see that the automatic setting replaces the intermittant setting.

Better would be to allow for an intermittant setting, like usual, and also allow for automatic setting if you wish. I hate to not have that control option, and instead have it replaced by a hi-tec gadget that could malfunction, as hi-tec gadgets are prone to do.

That said, so far I have had no problems, although I do wish I had a little more choice in the sensitivity settings which control how frequently the wiper motor activates. When the auto setting goes on the fritz, you have nothing between "slow" and "off" which is a bad situation.

The rain sensor works by bouncing infrared beams off the glass and measuring the reflection. Droplets of water on the glass change the way the light reflects in comparison to no water. It's also possible to fake the rain sensor into making the wipers move by touching the sides of the sensor.

Groping for ideas....if you use something like Rain-X on the windshield, stop and see if the situation improves. Also, is there anything near the rain sensor like a tollway transponder (Illinois I-PASS) or something hanging from the mirror? If so, remove that stuff and see what if anything happens.

Sometimes even adjusting the rear view mirror will trigger the sensor, causing the wipers to turn on briefly. Weird.

I don't think there is anything wrong with our rain sensing wipers, but it performs sub par for my taste. It either wipes too soon, or not soon enough. The only time it really works is when there is a lot of water that the wipe is continuous anyway as if it were on full. When I drive the RX330 I never use the rain sensing wiper setting.

My rain sensing wipers work perfectly. They come on at the right time and adjust their speed as needed. I never ever have to touch the wiper control. I love these things.

Mine work perfect as well, since I had the transmission hesitation TSB done. Prior to this they were flaky and would come on sometimes for no reason.

Maybe it's just a coincidence, or maybe the firmware had some other fixes in it that had to do with wipers? I'm talking about an 04 RX

mine are fine too, not many complaints. i find the sensitivity control is pretty good. the only thing that is a little annoying might be if you drive by some sprinklers and there is a lot of water spray from the wind to cause the wipers to wipe once, but that's expected from any car with rain sensing wipers. i usually just keep them Off since it rarely rains here anyway. and when it does rain they are on Auto and work just fine.

When my car was new the automatic wipers worked perfectly. Then strange things started happening. They would work in the rain and then all of the sudden the window was covered with heavy rain and they stopped! I was told that it was the EZ PASS! I put it in the glove compartment and it was better. One day I needed the EZ PASS and it rained! It still isn't as good as before. When I bring the car in for service I'm going to ask them if they can reset them or whatever. There must be a fix. I know my dealer will try hard to find a solution.

Put the EZPass tag on the upper passenger side windshield.

Mine work perfect too when there is rain or mist. It does sweep at some odd times (very rare) something triggers it--dont know what.

If there is no rain I just cut them completly off and when it rains I put it too Auto, I have never used any other settings

It turns out that the bracket holding the sensor in place was too loose, so they had to replace it. Then when I got it back they forgot to put in the silicon gel pad. After replacing the pad everything is back to working. By the way I have I-pass, the same thing as EZ pass, and I have the license plate transponder. It works great.
