Another part of the "illumination series" includes tackling the mirror switch. There is only one switch that will work on our cars that can do this, and that is the 2013-2018 Toyota Avalon w/ memory package. If your RX doesn't have memory seats or mirrors, this is how you add the more common illuminated switch in:
Parts needed:
1x 84872-07030 (2013-2018 Toyota Avalon mirror switch w/ memory)
1x 90980-12550 female connector with terminals
1x sacrificial junkyard mirror switch to use as an adapter (I could not find this plug anywhere and I looked HARD)
The 13-18 Avalons switch has 5 pins instead of 3. The rightmost 3 pins are the same as the RX's switch and controls the mirrors, the leftmost pin is the ground for the LED lights, and the pin to the right of that is the power for the LED lights. The Avalon switch also requires a different connector, if you find this switch at the junkyard, cut as much wire as you can! I got mine on eBay and it didn't come with a connector sadly. In my case, I had to buy the connector itself and pin it to fit the switch.
Avalon's mirror switch wiring. As you can see, it is super similar apart from a different connector and those extra pins for the illumination!
Finished harness. The other two wires need to be tapped into the car's wiring. I used the power door switch connector which is not an option on my car, but the connector is still there.
You can use the green wire for power and the black for ground on either the height control switch for air suspension or back door opener button (Neither of which my car has). This is from my heated steering wheel swap so ignore the middle wire for accessory
Test it before installing. The Avalon switch is a pure white vs the more blueish white that the RAV4, Highlander, Sienna and Corolla have. This matches our interior nicely!
It's installed! Definitely pretty cool to have and helps modernize the interior. I'll get a better picture of it at night. Changing the switch itself is simple. You just need to remove the driver side door sill plastic piece, remove the 10mm bolt behind the top of the sill plate where the dash is, pull a little, and you can pop the switch out with a tiny flatblade screwdriver. The new switch will fit right in place like it's at home.
Looks good! Definitely a pure white on the slightly dim side. I might pop some brighter LED 1206 chips in, or maybe do something about my heated steering wheel switch which is WAY too darn bright!
