Default Front Windshield Wipers Non Stop

Hi all,

Started having issues with my front windshield wipers today, they will not stop wiping. When I try to control the speed (Hi/Low), they stay constant. They stop moving when I remove the fuse. I have gone to Auto zone and had them check the car battery and alternator. Both are good according to the Auto zone tech (I did this as I hear the alternator might be faulty). In the forums, I've read that IS users have to swap out their "switch"? Can anyone help me determine what the issue is? or where I should check next?

Thanks in advance for everyone who viewed and is able to help.

Only partial answer here ... [ i need to look at the circuit diagram [which I don not have] to diagnose better].

Alternator and battery have nothing to do with the problem you are having ... [there may be a problem with the alternator, but it is separate issue].

What is involved is a wiper switch [in the stalk], a control module [I am guessing here .. circuit diagram would tell] and the wiper-motor. The control module can be stand alone or built inside the wiper motor. The control module gets the input from the switch and the delay setting on the switch to activate a sweep of the wiper arm. It also responds to slow medium and fast sweep setting of the switch. The wiper motor has an internal switch that senses the position of the wiper and if you switch the wiper off in the middle of the sweep, it still supplies the motor current till the wiper arm goes to the rest position.

Your problem could be the switch [stalk] or the control module or the rest-position sensor of the wiper motor.

You can potentially eliminate some items by applying logic ... if the wiper speed is still behaving correctly then the switch and the controller might be OK.

I hope this helps in understanding what is supposed to happen. I hope other members chime in or if some one has the circuit diagram we can suggest places to check. At the same time if my statements above don't make much sense to you and you will still need an auto-electrician [tools/skills/experience etc] then drive your vehicle to him/her for a fix.

[ps .. I have no idea how skilled you are. Let me assure you that NO offense is intended in my post]

The below may be oversimplified. There is another page showing the switch and the motor connectors are wired to the body ECU.

The switch seems likely to me. To test the switch
