Default Alarm System

The alarm system in our vehicle seems to go off at random times. It has gone off when I open or close the driver's door when unlocked. It just started doing this and I don't know why. I do not have a remote key fob, only just a key, so I dont know how the alarm is even being set. Anyhoo, just another annoying quirk to deal with. I am wondering what could cause this or if there is a way to disable the alarm system.
Has anyone else had this sort of problem?

The key fob operate the lock, so does the key and that activates the alarm.

Alarm should sound when some one uses the door release from inside with the doors locked. Any one can break a window and slide in and out of the window and the alarm will not sound. Also the alarm activates the sensor in the hood. So if the hood sensor detects the hood being opened with the alarm activated (vehicle locked), it will sound an alarm.

Just a reminder .. make sure you have at least 2 master keys with you (just in case one is lost).

Thank you for the reply. To be clear, my alarm goes off when the driver's door is opened from the outside, door not locked, and it will go off when I close the driver's door, again not locked. It does this at random and not all the time, very random. I have started locking the doors with the switch on the door before getting out of the car. I dont know if this has anything to do with it or not but the alarm hasn't gone off since using this method. Results remain to be seen.
is there a way to disable the alarm system altogether, not really worried about someone trying to break into a 20 year old Lexus.

I have shared what I know.

At times there are gremlins in the system and a battery disconnect for 20mins + can reset the whole system [you will loose the presets].

My guess would be that your alarm is in passive mode: meaning that it will arm itself when certain conditions are met.
Supposedly it can be turned to 'active' (so you have take action to turn the alarm on or off) by the dealer (using Techstream).
There are also some instructions on the net which involve opening doors and locking in a specific order to switch to active and back; search for RX300 passive mode. (not sure if it will work without the remote).

Mine (2002) is in passive mode and it is a pain; neither the mentioned procedure nor my Techstream can change it into active mode.

Cheers,
Johan
