horsepower thread?
Last week I found a thread on the RX300 and its horsepower.
I thought it was in this forum but can no longer find it, I also googled it as well.
The discussion was about how low the horsepower rating of the RX300 is with discussions about turning off the overdrive, the power mode switch for the transmission and also mentioned the power band being between 4k-5k rpm.
Anyone familiar with this thread? I would like to find it to reread it.
When driving up near lake tahoe, there were the times when the car seemed to have no power and that it was going to stop this happened at around 7,200 feet elevation. Car slowed down to around 30mph on an grade and thought I was going to come to a stop, I ended up shifting into 2nd gear, and that didn't help much.

Lot of folks overemphasize the "HP" but forget the real thing you feel is the "Torque" .
I would also suggest to stay away from finding techniques to boost the "HP" as the power needs to be transmitted through the transmission.

interesting... I also feel like my RX300 is way under powered, I have a co worker that also has one and he feels the same.
My mom has a 2001 Camry V6 same engine but not the VVT version that has way more get up a go by a long shot... not even close.. I know the weight of a vehicle is a factor but my RX300 is a dog...

Exactly, this topic is already dicussed in this thread. Before 3K rpm, the max hp delivered to wheel is a mere 94 HP. Dyno does not lie.

I found a very detailed dyno chart for 2002 RX300 AWD, 4 speed automatic transmission with 95 RON fuel. This is stock with no modification.
http://www.rri.se/popup/performanceg...1&Flap=Details
According to the dyno graph, max HP band is from 4800 to 5500 rpm. 4000-5000 rpm are RX's sweet range for maximum . Powertrain loss is about 20%. Wow, I need to find time to install forged rims, lightweight crank pulley, and forged lug nuts to improve effective hp delivered to those wheels.
If one leaves shift **** at "D" and let the auto transmission shifts from around 3000 rpm, the RX will deliver a mere 94 horse power to the wheels.

Rx -> Prescription for relaxed driving.
Back when the RX was introduced, its purpose was never to propel the payload at any significant speed (it was less than 10 sec to 60). Lexmex was into speed driving and had no issues with un-suspecting other drivers. There were sedans which were at 12+ so it was not a slouch by any means.
I really think speed was never the objective and I have never driven RX at WOT. This is not the vehicle for thrill seekers. I could still chirp my fronts during takeoffs ... keep in mind I had FWD.

My rx has lost a ton of power since first had it. I had a respectable 0-60 years ago the engine has had compression loss pure and simple. I currently need to change some sensors but I don't believe it will restore the power. May as well turbo it.

Engineers at Lexus still think speed is not the objective for the RX. I've driven my 1st Gen RX and 3rd Gen at WOT.....you're really not missing much other than less than spectacular handling at high speed. The RX is a point A to point B machine. Most of the Toyota auto models that tout high reliability and longevity do their business at the low rpm range. Less stress to the bottom end components.
