VSC, TRAC OFF, CEL - New gas cap does not seal. Any ideas?
These keep returning on my 03 RX300 (114k miles). Any ideas?
Replaced the gas cap but it still doesn't seal correctly. Looked closer at it and there is a strip of plastic around the mouth of the fuel tank where the gas cap meets it. It is not fixed in place. It rotates but does not come off. Looks to me as if it may be interfering with the seal. Is that piece of plastic meant to be there? If so, what does it do? I have an 89 Toyota Pickup with 230k miles on it. No piece of plastic around the mouth of the fuel tank. When I turn the gas cap on my toyota, I can hear the seal opening. It sounds like a sigh. No sound at all when I open the gas cap on my Lexus. So, something is interfering with the seal. Any ideas? I don't think it's the gas cap because that's brand new from Lexus.
Also, when I do solve this can someone point me to the post about removing the ECU fuse to reset the dash lights? I have a feeling I may have to do that a few times before I figure this out. Thanks.

There is rubber seal [like a thick O ring]. Are you missing that? Not sure how good are aftermarket caps, but OEM from Lexus/Toyota are not too expensive.
Acquire one of the cheap OBD2 readers. These days it is a must have tool. You can disconnect the battery too.

Mouth of filler tube is just metal.
The cap should have black gasket/oring. I purchased the gasket and kept my gas-cap. The gasket stays with the gas cap. It can be purchased by itself.

The new OEM Lexus gas cap has the black gasket/oring so that is not the problem which takes me back to my question in my original post. Does anyone else have a rotating piece of plastic around the mouth of the filler tube? Because my Lexus does and it appears to be interfering with the gas cap seal but before I cut it off it would be nice to know if it is meant to be there and, if so, what it does (apart from interfering with the seal).

Attach a picture if you can. It can be the old gasket from the previous gas-cap.

The only rubber I see is the rubber boot which helps position the inlet.

Old thread, but I have a 2004 GX470 that the gas cap (a new OEM and non OEM) will not seal or click shut. I do not have this black plastic piece outside of the filler tube and wondering if that is what I am missing.
What did you find out was your issue if you can remember?
Thanks!
