Default Shifter Cable Binding

Shifter cable has been binding and is difficult to engage into drive. We had this issue several years ago and my wife actually got stuck with the car when the cable snapped. She was towed to a AAA service station and the cable was replaced for ~$350 if my memory serves me. Lexus looked at it and said the cable and a metal lever at the transmission would need to be replaced because it was bent. Total: $1,500!!! A far cry from the ~$350 repair several years ago.
Does anyone know what a "fair" price would be for this repair? In doing a search I found one post that got a price of $750.

There is a difference between minimal repair and proper cure. Minimal repair lets you drive out and then it is a matter time before the stressed part wears out. While the proper cure involves removing unnecessary stress.

By the difference it seems, Lexus wants to suggest proper cure and that may involve more parts and more labor. You can cut that down by getting used/aftermarket part and going to a place where the labor is not that high.

If you give us a picture or two, we can potentially tell you what should be done. A good mechanic can also tell you what a proper cure would be .... Lexus has the advantage of experience.

Labor is 80-120 per hr, billed in 1/2 hr increments (rounded up).
