Grinding when Braking Less than 5mph
My 99 RX started this annoying breaking issue a little while back.
At first it only did it when braking going really slow and turning into a parking spot. It would make this grinding noise and I could feel it in the brake pedal. It felt like the pedal was giving away and not braking. Scared me!
I immediately changed the pads thinking that was the problem They were worn but not totally. I also flushed all the brake fluid out of the lines.
This did not fix the issue. It now does every time I slow to a stop at stop lights, signs or any other time I am almost stop. If I pump the pedal it immediately stops grinding and works.
I Did not turn or change the rotors. This is next on my list.
Does anyone have any idea what would cause this?
Thanks much!

is it more like a mechanical noise coming from the abs motor or an actual grinding from the brake rotors. it could be whats called low speed abs activation. that would explain why the pedal is sinking to the floor. that means the abs module thinks the front tires are losing traction based on the wheel speed senor readings and is causing the abs pump to activate. inspect the wiring going to the front wheel speed sensors and make sure theres not rust or particles forming on the abs tone rings which could cause false wheel speeds.

Have a look at this thread with a writeup from LexMex

I had the same issue. It was a cracked tone ring that would trigger the abs at low speed but did not trigger a failure code. I had to disable the abs (as opposed to actually fixing it).

I suspect the noise is a result of a bad ABS sensor but can't figure out if it's the right or left sensor that is the cause. I have become used to it as the noise is more of a nuisance as the brakes still function fine.
Any idea on how to determine if it's the right or left front ABS sensor?

Now that I read this and think about it, it def feels like its the ABS kicking in. Feels very much like the brakes when you are on ice.
I'll follow Lexmex's guide to cleaning out the ABS sensors and behind the boot of the axle and report back if it worked or not.
Thanks much for all suggestions!!
