How much 80W-90 gear oil is needed for drain-and-refill?

 

You will need 1 quart. I recommend Royal Purple 75W-90.

 

Do not attempt to open the drain, without making sure that you can open the filler. There are some sad stories about drained diff with stuck filler.

Is it bad to use 75W-90 if 80W-90 is recommended? I called auto parts stores yesterday trying to find Royal purple in 80-90 and one said they had 75w-90 but when I asked if it's ok to use that they said it's better to stick with what the manufacturer recommends. However, several people on here have recommended the 75w-90 so it's ok?

No, there is no issue doing this, I've been using the 75W90 for years and no issues.

The only advice I can suggest on that issue in the other thread is to have you or someone else listen to it an on an empty street as the vehicle goes by to see if you can localize the sound.

 

After a great deal of research, I'm using Amsoil Sever Gear 75W-90 in both my front transfer case and rear differential. I don't use Amsoil fluids in any other part of the RX and think it's too expensive - but for the once every 50K miles change, it's well worth it. By the way, I have 145,000 miles on my '02 RX300, use regular dino 5W-30 oil with Bestline engine treatment at every change, and ONLY USE this filter: WIX -- 51348. I can't recommend this filter more highly. My RX runs like new.
