Well it seems that maybe at one time someones pried the door open and maybe broke the piece on the cable that catches the door so i guess it prob needs another cable
Ok i think i figured it out i believe someone has pryed the fuel door ooen and busted the nipple off that latches to keep door closed. Can that be replaced without replacing cable and how do you change it?

Is it not part of the lid/door (welded on). If so you need to buy a new lid/door and have it color matched.
Post a picture.
At times you can epoxy something to the inside of the lid/door
I read the problem description different than do you, Salim. I think he is missing the part that protrudes and recedes in response to the lever in the passenger compartment.
Is it the pin that moves in and out as you pull the lever?
Or
The catch on the door (which receives the pin)?
Or
It is an adjustment ... relative to each other the pin does not extend enough to get to he catch or the catch is broken or not close enough to receive the pin.?

My 1999 just had this exact problem last night. I will tell you this - if you are by yourself, it is hard as poop to try to pull up on the fuel filler door latch inside the car and have something wedged into the fuel filler door to make it open.. I first tried my plastic grocery coded key fobs and each time it worked - but 3 times the door opened, the keys fell out - the door shut and locked back.. and I was left there not accomplishing anything.
Next I asked a fellow gas getter to pull up on the latch while I caught the door. Then I saw the little plastic fragments inside the fuel door assembly which proved something did in fact break.
The little spring was what broke loose. I have the spring and was able after about 10 mins to hold it into place while I quickly got the door shut. So I know it is in place but will fall straight out the next time I open the fuel filler door.
I plan to glue the piece back into place using JBWeld.. unless the $5.00 part shows me that it is in fact a true fix.
Thanks for posting this.. you are not the only one. Brian in Branson, MO

Reason: posted in wrong post -
Observe the picture you posted. It has a plastic base with a pin (raised) portion. If that piece is attached to the lid, then all you need to do is slide the metal push-off and it will click in place. If the plastic piece is missing then you have to secure a replacement to the door. Not sure what pieces are sold by Lexus.
Hi OzrkFisher Did your fuel filler door spring fix work out?

I had the same problem. The V-shaped spring fell on the ground. Some small plastic clip that holds it in place must have broken. I can glue it back, but will that hold? What product did you use, and what do you recommend from your success or what you learned?
