I just inherited a 2002 RX300 and am looking to get a new key shell for the keyless remote.

Is the transponder part of the remote module or must the key shell have a transponder chip?

I took the key fob apart and tried to start without the remote handy - no go.

Put the remote back in and it started.

Its inside the remote module. It has to be a certain distance from the ignition to start

Shells are fairly inexpensive on eBay, I recently bought one for 8.95 and 4 bucks shipping. I took the old key and the new one to the Lexus dealer and they charged me 14 bucks to cut the new key and even threw in a new battery.

I had also gotten a new remote key on eBay ($90) which they were kind enough to cut and program to my car for an additional 14.

Make sure you get one specifically for your car.
