Transmission question
I'm still learning how to use the site, I couldn't figure out how to post my question without replying to someone elses thread.
I have a 1999 RX300 AWD. When its cold, it takes a VERY long time to shift into second or third. In fact, sometimes it won't shift at all. Then once the car is warmed up, it drives perfectly. Does anyone know what this might be?

Welcome to the Club.
This is, I hate to say it, normal.
Sometimes it can take a few minutes. It's partially emissions related but also to give the fluids a chance to warm up and circulate in the system.

In my view, it is always better to post in the thread that exists, which is closely related to what you want to write about. If members do it, then they use the search function and in 9/10 chances are that their question has already been answered.
To add on to Lexmex's answer, by keeping higher gears locked out, the engine generates more heat and this helps in getting to the optimum temperature sooner. Repeating Lexmex's though the transmission spins harder and warms up the fluid quicker.
The driver must do his/her part by keeping the rpms below 3k till the machine reaches optimum operating conditions and to get there quicker, one should drive, instead of idelling.

I think you may have something going on here that's not normal. The shifts from 1st to 2nd in my car occur normally, regardless of whether the car is warm or cold - it's the shift from 3rd to 4th that are delayed until the engine is warmed up.
