2001 Tranny failed
Hi Friends,
Is it worth repairing this . The engine and body are excellent conditiion . Have had the car for 4 1/2 years . 179,000 MILES.
Thinking about the factory remanufactured install. Wife drives it about 8-9 thousand miles a year. Was hoping to keep it another
4-5 years. I lean toward doing the fix looking at like buying a used Lexus for 5 grand.
Regards,
Dan

This car sounds like it is in good shape otherwise, and you have gotten 4.5 years of reliable service so far. If you feel like this would get you a few more years of service out of it after the repair, I would consider doing it.
Also, please state the year and whether you have an AWD or FWD.
Find a couple of reputable repair shops in the area on Yelp and get some quotes. Then weigh that cost with buying another used car and all the potential problems it might have or develop. Also search the threads here discussing transmission replacements for prices and outcomes.

Thanks for the reply Lexmus. Sorry for not answering so soon
Its 2001 AWD RX300. This is the only issue we ever had. Engine has been excellent to this point. I'm one of those dudes who
changes oil ever 2500 mi. Body and interior are very nice. 179,000 mi. We have put 44,000 on it.

Danny

Wll, I went for the remanufactured trans with a three year 50000 mile warranty. If it last as long as the other it will be worth it. After checking my records I've had it for
5 1/2 years . Time will tell . Just hated to see it go to junk with a nice body in and out and strong clean engine. Thanks all

Hi,
Don't know about the tranny computer. Everything seems to be good so far. About 250 miles on it now. Will let you know how it goes after a couple of months.
Aamco near me did the job. They have done a couple for me the last 37 years(CHEVY AND TOYOTA) and everything was ok. I was considering Lexus untill
they treted me like a low class person. Never would use them again for anything or buy anything from them. This is probable my last Lexus anyway.

Tranny Relacement success!!
Hi All,
Been awhile getting back here. The Aamco Trany has done me well. I made 3 trips to Florida and back from Colorado doing 70-75mph.
It's been over 3.5 years since it was replaced and 35,000 miles or so. I would do it again in the same circumstances. Good luck

Interesting. I wonder if it would be cheaper to get a rebuilt transmission from your part of the world and have it shipped, assuming the builds are the same.
I have an original transmission with 225K miles on it. Been considering getting a rebuilt transmission and putting it on the shelf because I know I’m due, and otherwise the car/engine/body is in great shape.

At times the parts have a reduced price based on core return. So that means shipping price is 2x if you do a remote purchase. Just confirm.
Even as DIY, one is confident to handle the job, I would still recommend that farm it off to a mechanic as then the mechanic has to deal with warranty issues. The emmchaninc may be making an extra cut in the transmission purchase, but then he is on the hook when things fail post swap.
