Default replacement ignition key

I only received 1 key when I purchased my used 99 RX. To make a long story short, the key is missing. Called dealer and was told the computer would have to be replaced. Has anyone had similar experience?

I am the original owner of a 1999 RX300. I remember my dealer impressing upon me, when I took delivery, that if I lost all the keys the computer would have to be replaced, at significant cost.

Can you describe the key (shell color). Can it lock unlock the glove/trunk. If it is a master key, you can have duplicates made. If it is not a master key then for duplicates to work, you need to have the ecu changed (per dealers suggestion).

Master key can operate the glove compt lock and typically the plastic is black shell. It is too late now, but you should have insisted on getting at least the master key when you purchased the vehicle.

New vehicle comes with 2 master keys, I valet key, one credit-card (flat) key.

I didn't buy the car from a lexus dealer and did make somewhat of a fuss over getting only one key but in the end gave up the fight. I didn't realize how difficult it would be to get a key made if the one got lost. Hind sight! I'm still holding out hope that I can find my keys and will only have to deal with getting a duplicate. Until then, obviously, the car will have to stay put. On top of having to replace the computer, I will have to have it towed about 90 miles to the nearest Lexus dealer! How ridiculous to have to go to such expense due to lost keys.

I have been through a similar issue. Except all I had was a valet key. My suggestion to you is to order a master key from lexus and have them cut the key from your VIN #. After that call your local locksmith. My local locksmith, was able the flash the ECU and "tricking" it to being reset as if the car was just of the production line. This enabled him to program the key from scratch. I've got the same story from Lexus about replacing the ECU.....for $2000. My locksmith was only $400.....with a brand new remote master key!!!!! and if i wanted a extra it was another $125....a lot cheaper than Lexus. Try your local locksmith....i hope this helps.

Thanks for all the responses. I talked with someone at 2 Lexus service depts. and called Lexus usa and got the same solution from each....replace the computer. I don't have to pay for the computer, but have to pay 250.00 in labor plus 2 keys at 100.00 each. I asked about getting a master from the VIN and was told can't be done. Very frustrating! I will look through past threads. Thanks again!

From your posts it seems you DO NOT have a master key.

If you understand how it works, may be your frustration will go away. The vin can match the groves on the key. That will let you lock/unlock the doors. The electronic id between the key and the computer is a 0/1 based codes established by the electronic handshake (matching codes). Almost like the password ... which your system admin cant even tell what it is, but can reset it for you. Unfortunately the system admin's credentials are in the master key.

IMHO: I would say stop fighting it and move on. A free of cost cpu and no need to re-key all the locks and ignition is a good deal even if it sets you back $450. Other options will be risky or more expensive.

$100 each for 2 keys from Lexus sounds too cheap. You may want to verify exactly what you are getting. It sounds to me like it is 2 master keys (non-remote). If I am correct about this, lexus will want more for remote masters. Maybe a lot more. As long as you understand what you are getting this is the hassle free way to get going at a good price.
If you were looking to save some money and introduce a little hassle into the process, you could have the ECU reflashed for a little over $100 and buy a after market non-remote master cut to your vin for less than $50. Yes they can cut masters to your vin. What Lexus was trying to tell you is that having it cut to your vin will open doors and turn the ignition but the car won't start without a new or reflashed ECU and programming the key to it. Higher end local locksmiths should be able to reflash your ECU and Sewell Lexus will reflash mail order.
