Question for Lexmex on Castrol Syntec
Hello Lexmex,
I appreciate all your imput to the forum. You are a big fan of the "European" Cantrol synthetic..
Is this based on oil analysis data or just experience with the oil???
I have used dino in my RX. It has 85K and I am thinking of switching to high-mileage mobil 1 at 90K...
I have used Mobil 1 5W-20 in my 2006 Acura TL since fairly new...
I am trying to appreciate WHY the castrol is BETTER then Mobil 1 or Amsoil
Thanks

Both.
Originally, when I was in Mexico I knew friends with turbocharged classic VW Beetles were using the stuff. It was $30 a quart at BMW (that was the only place you could get it), but they just loved the stuff to death. I then studied German Castrol on BITOG, www.bobistheoilguy.com on their forums.
Eventually in early 2007 I switched over, tired of Mobil 1 and its consumption issues which I had to rectify with additives.
I never once had a consumption issue with the Castrol.
My other two favorite oils after that would be Amsoil 0W30 and Pennzoil Platinum 5W30.
The Amsoil is an excellent oil in its own right, but it's neither commonly available (such as at a neighborhood store nor cheap) and UOA comparisions of it with German Castrol don't show any outstanding quality or anything that makes it truly superior to the GC, especially to justify roughly $4 more per quart for Amsoil 0W30 over the GC.

I have done UOA on GC, still has a sample of Mobile 1 5w-30 EP but has not spent the $ to sent it to a lab. Let me know anyone wants to sponsors the testing, I will post the result on the forum, just like what I did with GC UOA.
GC is 100% pure Group IV, base oil far superior than M1's Group IV. Lexmex and I prefer thicker oil at high temp and thin oil at startup, GC's viscosity spec is just great, especially for the price.
Old SL rated M1 0w-30 is a good oil, unfortunately, Mobil Exxon changed the formulation with SM rated products. Testing and reasonings are well covered in great depth at BITOG.

I have used dino so far with no consumption issues at all....actually i am always impressed at how clean the oil looks when i change it....I change at every 3k
I bought my 2001 with 60K miles....i now have 85K.....
The previous owners wife did use mobil 1 a few times as I found some service records in the glove compartment after buying it...
I am considering the high mileage Mobil 1.....What makes this oil "high mileage"...additives???
Are people having consumption issues with Mobil 1???
Why the "bad rap" for Mobil 1 on this forum??
It would seem that a comsumption issue would have more to do with engine itself rathe then the lubricant.....
I have used Mobil 1 on my Acura TL with no issues

It's indeed possible depending on factors such as how you drive, where you live (climate), that Mobil 1 may work out just fine, but I had to look to alternatives with my experience south of the border and figured if I could get a better oil for roughly the same price, why not go with that.
The criticism of Mobil 1 has gone on for a few years. We even see it on ads on tv and other media, Castrol Edge is one that uses that, Valvoline also has been using that with their synthetic oil and of course Amsoil has long been showing it is superior to Mobil 1.
I did find the Mobil 1 0W40 to be the best one that I tried of the Mobil family.
I'll gladly use Mobil 1's ATF for PSF fluid and might have considered using that ATF for my tranny had I stayed longer in Mexico since it now has the Type IV spec with it's new formula.
On the extended perfomance, I quote none other than Mobil,

What is the difference between Mobil 1® Extended Performance and Mobil 1?
Mobil 1 Extended Performance formulas are designed specifically for today's longer service intervals and are guaranteed to protect for up to 15,000 miles or one year.
Mobil 1 Extended Performance has a unique formulation with a boosted level of protection and performance. Mobil 1 Extended Performance, with the Advanced SuperSyn System, contains 50 percent more SuperSyn than Mobil 1. (Updated March 2006)

I like the GC oil very much also, and it runs absolutely perfect in my daughters 02 Elantra. However,I switched from the GC to Mobil-1 0W-30 in my RX due to not being able to pull the very steep hills here after work.I have noticed a huge difference now on these same hills with the MB-1 oil in it.Goes up them a lot easier, seems mine prefers the thinner oil.I should also add that I loose a lot of power when the A/C is on,some times I wonder if its my compressor. (although the A/C performs very well) kow.
I have a private stash of M1 0w-20 and 0w-30, but M1 SM versions are more expensive.
Try a 0w-20, either M1 or Amsoil next time, you may like it more than 0w-30
Thanks for all the info guys....
I am still not sure what oil I am going to use next in the RX....
The Mobil 1 0W-20 should be ok for my Acura TL right???
The TL "recommends" 5W-20"
Thanks again

I have a gen 2 Acura TL, used 0w-20 for many years. I have over 140K miles, needless to say factory recommendation is just rule of thumb for the general car buyers. Dig a little deeper, you will know what is best for your car.
