Exclamation Question about sythetic oil

Hello I just registered on this site today and had a question, because I am about to handle my first oil change in my Lexus. It's at 96000 miles and I would like to use sythetic oil, but I am not sure of what was used prior to me owning the car (dealaerships ftl...)

I do not currently have any leaks that I know of, but I am worried that if conventional oils have been used the whole time, the seals might be affected by the synthetic oil. I'm not to sure of the exact details of this and would like some enlightenment.

I'd like to use synthetic because I am usually in heavy traffic, lots of stop and go, etc... I am just not sure if synthetic oil was used before.

If you are worried about it, use a 40 weight to start off, instead of something like a 20 to 30 weight, and then next oil change move on down. I use a Castrol 0W30 that acts more like a 40 weight.

Synthetic oils are thinner than conventional oils so starting off at a higher weight might help to see if it will leak or not...

Cool thanks guys. I just bought one myself and was going to post up a topic.

What brands does everyone usually go for in here?

i use mobil1 5w30 supersyn... on my engine with 100,000kms (60,000 miles) it did not leak at all... if it leaks, then just change the seals that are leaking and get on with life... synthetic oil is worth it... my mobil1 stays golden after 5000kms of stop and go driving... whereas conventional oil would be black ater 4000kms...

changing seals can be expensive, not worth the risk imo.

if your oil is black ater 4000kms then you've got probs.

problem is continued stop/go driving... and conventional (cheap) grade 5w30 dino oil with a toyota filter...

after doing a couple oil changes with synthetic (first one drained at 4000kms, brown) my oil's been MUUUCH cleaner...

service history on my car is complete... with oil changes every 8000ish kms with conventional oil...

yup. stop and go traffic will do that to you. My car's oil turns dark after just 1500 miles. Yes, my city driving is that bad. Luckily, I change my oil every 2k miles

Since this is about oil, has anybody tried the Lucas Oil stabilizer or Hy-Per Lube?

I use Castol GTX 5W30 and Fram oil filters. change every 4000 Kilometres, Lexus says to change every 6. The oil sort of is black at 4 already, but that's because I do a lot of start/stop city driving. I think it's fine. These engines go till like 800,000 KMS, so unless ur planning to keep the car until then, why pay double for oil? The engine will even run perfect at 500,000 unless u rape it then who knows you can even break it after 10 KM lol.
