Cheap OBDII reader @ Costco
I know what you mean. I mainly did this just to make sure the code reader worked ok, rather than wait till I needed it.
Of course things never go as smooth as planned. After I reset the CEL I was left with a VSC light on. It turns out a number of Toyota products have a defective VSC computer which causes the VSC light to stay on after resetting an evap type CEL. These Toyota products issued a TSB which offered a VSC computer replacement under the emmissions warranty. Lexus never acknowledged that they had this defective computer but this problem has surfaced on a number of RXs. I had to do a zero point calibration by using a jumper on certain OBDII conector pins per a Toyota TSB to get the VSC light to go out.

Just picked mine up today! It was on an end cap of the isle. Worked great! Correctly identified my codes, and then erased them. I can't believe how much the dealership charges for some of these small problems. Seems ridiculous.
does this clear the CEL? once i read the codes...i erased them and it confirmed "erase ok"...but it seems that it only erased the codes but it DID NOT clear the CEL (check engine lamp). has anyone else had this problem with this product?
