Unhappy Coil Packs Repeatedly Going Out...:(

Hi Everyone,

I have a 99 RX 300 with 133,000 miles. I'm having issues with repeated coil pack failures. I've had number 6 go out twice, and two other coil packs after that, all within a year. Today, the familiar studdering started again...I'm hoping this one will hold on for a while. Can a coil pack have intermittent problems and hold on for several months? And has anyone else had this happen?

Thanks for all replies!

Typically if one out six fails, [not premature failure] the others would fail in a short duration.

For a repeat failure, either the replacement was of inferior quality or some thing is stressing the replaced part.

Was the coilpack dry?

Yes, but I haven't heard of this issue in the RX300. I have such an issue now with my girlfriend's Ford Expedition and in that case it's due to the contact springs that touch the top of the spark plug getting stretched or corroded. Sometimes, I get a misfire code and sometimes not, but ended up ordering another coil (they were under $30 each for her vehicle). When were the spark plugs last changed?

I had my spark plugs replaced around 56K (yeah, too early by about 44K) because I was taking a long trip up to Ohio and didn't want to get stuck so did the 60K maintenance. Then the coil packs failed #4 at about 90K and #1 at 100K. So far, 115K, no other packs have gone. I'm not sure if my thought that the other four will probably go out soon are warranted or not.

What kind of spark plugs did you use? I hope not Bosch....If so go back to NGK or Denso iridium and your problem will go away. I have a lot of bad experiences with the Bosch plugs in several brands of vehicles (Honda, Mercedes, Toyota) all bad experiences. They run for a while and then fail.....

Thanks for all of the replies!! I had the dealership replace all of my spark plugs about a year ago when the #6 coil pack was replaced. I'm not sure what they used. Since then #6 went out again and then I think #1... I just put it in the shop locally last month to have #3 replaced and I'm just hoping that it's not about to happen again...

You dont wash your engine down do you. Sometimes moisture can get in the spark plug hole and cause corrosion. Other than that I am out of ideas. I assume the dealer intstalled OEM plugs....

Dealer would use the OEM (not even equivalent).

I've never washed down my engine, so it shouldn't be moisture...
I hope that I don't end up having to replace all of them in the end.
