How are you checking?

Should be in Park, engine running, flat surface, after 15-20minutes of actual driving.

For FWD:

If you drain from the transmission AND the front differential, you need 4Qts.

I've always been checking with the engine OFF, and checking within two minutes of turning off. So, I'll say drive home from work, then I'll turn engine off and go out and check the fluid. It's thus far always been in the "hot" range and nothing wrong thus far.

I think once the car is in park, it shouldn't matter if the engine is running or not since the drive shaft shouldn't be engaged and so the torque convertor should be rotating anyway.

As for level, don't overfill either, it's almost as bad as underfilling.
