The last alignment I did was on my Honda (dealer), and they have shown me the printout with the measurements BEFORE doing the alignment. It saved me some $$$ since the rear axle was actually fine.

I would imagine a good shop could do the same and let you know if you actually need an alignment or not.

The Hunter machine actually gives a printout of the before and after. That's the only one I have found that can do the true 4 wheel alignment for AWD.

The purpose of the printout is to give you, the customer a warm fuzzy feeling and I guess it is working. The printout assumes the operator has done everything correctly. There is still room for operator error.

Two more important things to take care of are first rotation (and second balance). I saw so many times back in Mexico where the front left tire was a bit more worn (especially on the corners), because the weight of the driver and to a lesser extent the engine combined with no tire rotation caused this tire in particular to be worn down and the right side front tire to a lesser extent to be worn compared to the rear tires.

I agree, rotation and re-balance is important. those free rotations and balances at many places are worth a lot.
