Default Trunk strut replacement?

Hi,

Left trunk strut of our 2000 RX300 just failed.

Anyone know how much to replace it?

Would it matter if I take it to Toyota? Cost difference?

Your help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
eagle

The 2001 Highlander rear tailgate struts have different part numbers, however, I'm not convinced that they are totally different parts and suspect the part number is just a lexus/toyota identification.

Your best bet would be to take yours off and compare it to the part at the Toyota counter or if your luck ask the part guy to bring one out to your car to compare.

Toyota will hav a less expensive part, however, you will be unpleasantly surprised at the cost regardless of dealer..

Best bet is to go aftermarket.
May have purchased on ebay with minimal modifications for a fraction of what the dealers are charging.

Good luck..

Mine have both failed and just waiting for more options in the aftermarket.

Someone found a replacement direct from a gas strut manufacturer in the past year somewhere here on the RX forums. Try an advanced search for it here. The part required a little modification, but was pretty simple. The price was extremely friendly too.

Thanks guys.

A fellow Lexus owner from another forum bought it from this vendor.

Price indeed is better than the dealers'.

Thanks Thomas1/lenore.

I went ahead and did the "Buy Now" for the struts.

About $66 bucks for the pair.

I'll let you know how the installation goes.

I'm one of those who bought the aftermarket rear hatch struts that were discussed here a while ago. They required no modification. I'm sure you can find them on a search. I seem to recall they were made in Turkey, custom for the importer. They have more black finish and less chrome than the OEM but work fine.

Default Need Help Installing the Lift Supports - Please Help!

Please help!

I just bought a pair of these lift supports. I'm having trouble getting the ball joint to go in the socket. There is a little wire in there - do I need to take it out to get the ball joint to go into the socket? Or do I just need to get a hammer and wack it a couple of times?! How do I get this together?

Anyone that's installed these please let me know as I've got the old ones off and really need to get the new ones on.

Thanks all!

Scott

What you call "the little wire" (spring clip) stays. You don't need to "whack it with a hammer", but it is a tight fit. Maybe some mild force with a vice, vice-grips, or pliers; or maybe spread the spring clip apart a little, and make sure it is centered OK. Make sure the ball joints are properly seated.

I bought these same struts and they are working great so far...

If you push up on the hatch door beyond the "normal opening point" then the ball will pop in..

Hope that helps..

I had emailed Lou and got a response back from him. Here's what he said:

The little wire is a lock, you need to remove it and reinstall it once you
put the unit together, and it just slides off. Do not remove the wire that
is inside of the joint, the ball will slide over it, just takes a little bit
of pressure to get it into there.

Thank You
Lou

I did this and was able to get them installed.

One problem though -- when I open the hatch about half way where the lifts would normally lift the hatch the rest of the way -- it doesn't. The only way to get the hatch all the way up is to push it with the new lifts. It's as if the new lifts don't have enough pressure inside of them to do the job. I have the factory spoiler so I don't know if this makes a difference.

I've email Lou back and we'll see what he has to say. Any of you here have this problem or did the hatch go all the way up after you opened it about half way? Let me know.

Hello

The rear lift supports on my 2000 RX300 are a good bit worn, they don't hold the rear hatch up in cold weather.

Looking for a decent quality replacement. I see a couple listed on Amazon.

Anyone replaced them recently and recommend a decent replacement part? I understand the ones are the dealer are big $$$$

Thanks
