Check Engine Light 99RX 300 Help!
Hello,
I have a 99 RX 300 with 90,000 miles. While coming to a stop at a stop sign today the Check Engine light suddenly came on and the car began idling very rough. It almost died at the stop sign. As per the manual I checked the gas cap, and filled up with gas. Still the same thing.
Has anyone had a similar experince with their RX and if so, what was the deal?
Thanks,
Jon

Go to an autozone and ask to use their OBDII scanner or better yet just buy one if you start running into codes.
If you search the forums, you will find about cleaning your MAF sensor and pulling either the negative battery cable or the EFI fuse in your fusebox.
I doubt its the gas cap.
Koolaidman is right in also cleaning out your throttle body...not hard to do with some carb cleaner and spraying (not streaming) a little water.
Do a search and you will find the post.

I have had the same problem twice before.....Once it was the gas cap. AutoZone can reset your light and with a new cap it was fine. The other time it was the vacuum hose on the air filter. When the guys at the Jiffy Lube check the air filter the hose can come off easily. I always have the check it now. Both are easy and inexpensive. But get the error code first and check these things.

The above is not precise but in general a reasonable simplified explanation of "check engine light'.

But do as suggested by above posters, go to your local Autozone and ask for a OBDII read out, write down the code number and post here again. Otherwise, take it to the shop as soon as you can.

Thanks for all of the help!!!!
It was in fact the coil for Spark Plug Number 5.
Replaced spark plugs and the coil on number 5, and all is well.
Thanks again for all of the help.
