Changed Out Remote, Key Doesn’t Work
The remote on my key fob stopped working. I order another key and swapped out the remote. I reprogrammed the remote, and it works. But, although the key will turn over the engine, it will no longer start the engine. The spare key still starts the engine. Anyone know what I did, and what I can do?
So are you saying the immobilizer is not letting the engine catch? [the starter is spinning the engine].
And the programming you did? For remote function [not registering the key].
If you used the old electronics then you should not have programmed anything .. just replacing the battery is enough.
If you are using the new [to you] electronics then programming would be needed for remote function as well as registering the new electronics as the magnetic slug is at the base of the electronics. Registering will only work if you have a registered Master key.

I’m not sure of the terminology, but the functions in the base of the key (the buttons) stopped working. Replacing the battery did not fix the issue. I bought a blank key, removed the guts at base of the blank and put those guts in my old key. I then successfully programmed (a series of crazy steps) the new guts so it would lock and unlock the doors. Now, my old key will turn over the engine but not start the car.
I assume there is a chip in the old guts that allow the car to start and that the chip in the new guts has to be programmed to allow the car to start, but I have no idea how to do that.

Yes, the new guts will not start the engine [the starter would turn but the spark is suppressed]. You would need the new blank key blade to be cut.
Do not trash the old guts as it has the slug to enable immobilizer.
To program the new guts, you need a Master Key. I hope your old guts [or 2nd key] is a master as that will allow you to make a copy. The instructions are on the web and even somewhere here in CL. The steps would require the Master key in the steps.
Caution ... Make sure you do not mixup the old master keys. Do not try to program the old master key(s). Only program the new key.

ps: Auto lock smith should be able to cut and program the new key. Dealerships typically refuse to cut owner provided blanks, but they readily cut the key they sell.
