Pads still have a bit of life left in them. Got a good 2mm before they trip the sensors.

Looking at that groove, you will need to replace the rotors whenever you do finally need new pads though.

They look fine for now, just wait until the sensor tells you to replace them and buy new rotors as well.

Thanks for all your replies.

Yes, I will have to replace both the pads and rotors when it’s time. Similarly the front brakes too (I had replaced the front pads about a year and half ago, but not the rotors bc they were still within specs).

My RCF currently has 98K miles!! The rear pads are OEM!! I bought my RCF from a Lexus dealership in SoCal as a Certified Lexus with sone 18XX miles on the odo back October 2015.

I think maybe towards the end of this year I’ll sell my RCF and get the LC500 Convertible.

Do only certain years have sensor on them telling drivers it’s time to change out the pads? I took my RCF to get an oil change + alignment yesterday at a local Lexus dealership. When I went to go get my car after service was done the rep said my front brake pads are at 5mm and will be needing new ones most likely next 5k - 6k miles. I say to him I’ll wait until the sensor tells me (after lurking in this thread) it’s time and he says these cars don’t have sensors on them to notify drivers.

Yes they do but only 1 in front and 1 in rear.

Yes they have sensors, unless the previous owner deleted them. Nothing stopping you from replacing the pads before the sensor trips though, because once they trip you have to replace the sensor. They're only like $15 for rock auto, but the OEM part is an added expense on top of pricey OEM parts to begin with. So at 5mm, start budgeting for a brake job in the near future in my opinion.

Haha. About four years ago at around 45K miles I was doing a lot of traveling with my RCF. A Lexus dealership far away from home told me that ALL OF MY brake pads needed replacing ASAP bc they were down to 3mm and I said nope and will continue to drive it.

About two years later I got back to home in SoCal and took my RCF in for the 60K spark plug replacement and other routine services. The Lexus dealership told me I still got about 6 mm left on my pads all around!!!

So EITHER the first Lexus dealership way out of town lied OR I had the world’s first self growing brake pads!! LOL

One sensor at each wheel. Less than $15 each at Rock Auto. But it like $75 + at Lexus.

Yes, you can reuse the OEM sensors if not tripped or damaged during removal. I reused the two front sensors when I replaced the front pads about a year and half ago.

Good to know fellas. I appreciate the responses.

There is so much to learn with this car. Seems like a lot of people take their RCF to the dealership for maintenance. I’m used to doing my own brakes, spark plugs, serpentine belt, etc on my Tacoma as long as there is a very detailed YouTube video or forum write up and doesn’t require any special tool(s). I hope there are videos and write ups out there for the DIY folks.

Cheers. Happy Friday and I hope everyone has a great weekend. I’m on my long stretch off work so I don’t go back until Thursday. Gonna be driving the Lexus the whole time instead of my truck, even in this rainy Oregon weather.

I replaced my pads and reused the old sensors. It was incredibly easy to do. Easier than all the Lexuses and Toyotas that I've had. The jacking up of the car and taking the heavy wheels on & off are what I hate doing. DIY will save you hundreds of dollars from taking it to the dealer. They want you to replace the rotors and sensors, which are a total waste of money, The original rear rotors are barely worn after the 1st set of pads. I will replace them on the next pads change, maybe, The rear rotors on my IS350 went through 2 sets of pads with no problems.
