Default Daily Driver question...

Don't hurt me, I'm new and fell in love with the interior of the RC. Now, I can afford an RC-F or an RC350, but I am curious, what real gas mileage do you think I will get if I am 80% highway driving an RC-F and I know the power must be great, but is it really "necessary" or "useful" etc. as a daily driver. Be honest with me please, not just biased because you own an RC-F. I'm going to switch from an LS430 btw, probably get an RC for awhile until the LC500 convertibles drop in price on the used market. Thanks for the replies.

If you drive in the "limp" eco mode, you can get up to 25 - 27 mpg on the highway at steady speeds. However, ECO mode seriously cuts power, response etc. Regarding power, if you are driving with traffic area in sport+ and manual mode then no the power is not very usable. You downshift a couple of gears down to 2nd gear and accelerate to redline, shift up to third and you are doing 75 mph in a few seconds. Almost 500 HP is not necessary at all. An RC350 with 300 HP has more than adequate power for any scenario.

Why I bought my RCF? I have two other cars that get driven 95% of the time. Just because I wanted to own it. I wanted to be able to experience the high-rev V8 at-will and make small tweaks here and there to see how the car could be made even more fun. I don't take it to the track (don't have a track in my city), but it is plenty fun in spirited driving conditions on open twisty roads That is pretty much it.

Oh nice, Molten Pearl, I think I can hammer some dealers on that color, no offense, I think I like it, but haven't seen it in person, obviously you like it, how has it been, was it your first choice? (I say that about the dealers because I think covid plus SUV mania has a handful of Molten Pearls in the used market that have been on dealer lots close to 2 months).

It is one of those colors that has to be seen in real life to be appreciated. I never thought seriously about this color as I wanted infrared, ultrasonic blue 2.0 or liquid silver. This was way too flamboyant for me until I saw it in real life. I did not want to stick out like a sore thumb as this color does not blend in at all especially with the RCF styling. When I saw it, it was instant love with the car. Then, it was almost brand new with 8000 miles, carbon fiber/TVD package, private seller so no GST ($4000 savings) etc. Everything just felt right and I am so glad I got it.

It is a rare color to find and even more rare with the carbon fiber/TVD package since it was only in 2015 and 2016.

The F is my daily driver and i take it on all road trips. Since April of last year I have put almost 26k miles on it. I usually get 27-28 mpg on the highway doing 75 mph. 29 mpg if im lucky and the road is flat. I think the power is fine for daily driving around town. My city speed limits are 45 mph, so you can go through first gear wide open throttle without going over the speed limit. At 41 mph the car shifts into 7th gear and around 44mph it shifts into 8th when in auto mode. I would say it has been a perfect daily driver so far.

I turn the question back around to you... if the RCF has about 5mpg worse than the RC350 on the highway, how much money per year would you really be saving? Is it worth it?

If gas mileage is the primary concern, get an electric car at best, and a hybrid at worse. Those cars are made to really save people money and eco footprint (though that's debatable in the eco footprint when you factor in the manufacturing). Otherwise, I think the fuel economy differences per year are so small that choosing between cars that have less than 10mpg difference won't affect your wallet in a significant manner.

This isn't meant as an endorsement for the RCF by the way, it's just meant as saying mpg should be down the list of the should you or shouldn't you decision.

That is a very good way of putting it. Seems like the mpg is about the same or better than an LS and I don't have anyone I need to put in the back seat, so the LS is great, but not a priority. Thanks for a dash of logic, I appreciate it.

Thanks, seems like you only live once and I might as well try and get an RF, the price won't be that incredibly different on the used market. Appreciate the information.

No problem. I have gone through that calculus many times myself which is why I brought it up. When stressing about mpg, I end up realizing it's less than a $1k difference per year between something fuel efficient and something not (given the amount of driving I do) and that's just not enough savings to convince me to choose something I don't like as much.

I use my RC-F as my daily driver and it's a great place to spend time commuting. I would definitely go with the RC-F over the RC350 if you can afford it. Sure, the maintenance costs will be higher and the fuel mileage a little lower, but the fun factor is way higher in the RC-F. I get around 18 MPG in town and am almost always in Sport+ and manual mode. I got 26 MPG on a 6 hour highway trip (Eco mode). You should be in a good position to get a deal given the COVID current situation.
It's incredibly hard to get an accurate picture of the molten pearl color as it looks different depending on angles and sunlight. I almost didn't even go look at the RC-F I ended up buying because of the molten pearl color, but I was blown away after seeing the car in person. I've had mine for about 9 months and couldn't be happier with my decision to go with the RC-F.

Actually that photo helps, it looks great there. I definitely am considering the molten along with the red and blue, I want that 3 stage paint or is it 5 stage paint or something? Are those the only 3 colors with the "super" paint?

The Molten Pearl was a 4 stage process.

The first coat is a primer followed by silver and then a clear coat, followed by the color coat that reflects off the silver to give an additional luster. A final top color coat is then applied. (Molten Pearl uses a four-layer process made possible by the strength of its primer material and vibrant primary color, meaning a silver reflective coat is not necessary.) The vehicle passes through baking ovens four times during the process, and is sanded by hand with a gentle water-based application. Inspectors scrutinize each vehicle to ensure the paint meets strict standards.
