I purchased the car directly from the buyer in Calgary, Alberta. We have the same rule here in Calgary. There is a GST of 5% when you buy a CPO from the dealership. However, if you buy it directly from the seller/private party, you don't pay any GST. I ended up saving $3500 on my purchase since I paid off the lien on the car and then it was transferred over to me.

Superstition Springs sucks. Not surprised they fed you a line.

That being said, they value the CPO a lot... certainly a lot more than I do.

It's much cheaper to just buy from a other state and have it shipped to you in most cases and with lower millage, online you have more choices then just taking whatever your area has to offer I've found.
