Default Engine Codes

What does it take to read the engine codes? I read on another thread that any OBDII compliant device could read the codes but there is special Lexus software that cost nearly $3,000 to read extended codes. I have a friend who drives an Audi S4 and he says there's a special device for Audis that connects a laptop directly the the diagnostics port. You do need the software but it's nowhere near 3k! Does Lexus provide anything like that? I'm looking for something to buy that I can use at home. Thanks.
