Default Upgrades to pass CA smog

I’ve been trying to research legal ways of adding herse perr to my is200t 17’..... I read one article that said the two options were nitrous and Sueprcharger. I also read about doing a Hybrid turbo but don’t fully understand what that all entails and if it’s smog passable.

I'm just looking for someone to help me on how I can get over 300hp and still pass smog. I have a Injen intake and a JB4 currently. Thanks in advance for the discussion it’s why I love this Lexus community and the peeps in it.

PS please don’t respond with move to another state or buy another car

thanks as usual Sasnuke!!!
question about JB4 for my 17’. I emailed BMS about a week ago asking but haven’t heRd back yet, what map settings can I use besides Map1? I thought Map 5 was auto and it threw a “reduced power visit dealer” code. I reset it and turned the car off and then back on and it cleared it. I have an injen intake and air filter but just wondering how I can get the Max outta the jb4 with what I have now.
can I run E85? Is it actually gain more HP?

Unfortunately performance improvements to the turbo motor aren't my forte...from their site it does appear you can add E85 and the JB4 can be tuned with that in mind.
@timghetta might be able to add more insight here.

As long as you have a CAT on your car I don't think you should not have a problem, the engine is going to do a 14.7:1 air fuel ratio and if the car bigger turbo it's only during acceleration it will go to 10:1 or what ever the engine tuned too.

Get a High flow CAT downpipe and get TTI Stage 2+ tune or if you keep stock downpipe and not changing it, TTI offers a Stage 1 where you keep your stock downpipe.
The engine tunes are "bin" files and you keep your stock ECU file and can change at anytime to go through emission testing. Just need the OBD2 tool and a laptop and you can swap them anytime which they sell you the tool with the tune for your engine.

Have no problems with it, I did have the Stage 1 at one time and that tune gave it more power, now I run the Stage 2+ with TCU on my 200t

Nah, It's CA.

You can pass the STAR or the Sniffer test with a cat, but you'd fail the visual test.

If you fail the initial visual test, they won't even proceed to the dyno, sniffer test or STAR test. Unless you know a guy. lol

Even the cats have embossed CARB numbers now, so the techs can see if your replacement complies. Modding a car in CA is really a frustrating waste of time and money, unless the parts can easily be swapped back to stock for a smog check, or are visually undetectable. You're pretty much down to little mods like thermostats, air filters, and mufflers. I've been fighting the state since 1984, when the program first started, and it's gotten more **** every year.

You cannot even add an intake pipe in CA. Only the Lexus pipe is legal. Supercharger definitely not.

- F Sport Intake (non turbo)
- Bored throttle body (?)
- Mid pipes (?)
- Axelback
- Plug-n-play ECU Tune (remove for inspection)

I have a ported throttle body on my Mopar, and it flies right through the visual inspection. One of those little mods that's basically indistinguishable.

Yeah basically invisible mods.

Things like an intake, header, exhaust, etc will fail the visual easy.

Luckily I know a couple guys lol

Actually, when this nonsense first started, there was little guidance for the smog techs. Their marching orders were just to verify that all applicable pollution control devices were installed and functional, as supplied from the factory. I had long tube headers, which were fine, as long as there was a heat pipe connected to the thermac air cleaner. Aftermarket carbs and intake manifolds would also pass, provided vacuum ports were available for the smog connections. Basically, if all required pollution control equipment was functional and tailpipe emissions didn't exceed the specifications, you were good to go. It was a grand time, but to short-lived, as the requirements kept getting more restrictive until we reached the current state of insanity, where even a more efficient, cleaner running car will fail.

My Evo 9 will pass smog with the RRE high flow cat I put in, but it has a downpipe, exhaust, o2 housing, intake, etc. All visible.

Luckily my guy doesn't look lol.

It's definitely more fun to mod if you know a guy.
