Supercharger....Let's get serious.
Ok, guys....here it is: I'm seriously thinking about FI for my GS400.
I have read and read and read, but there is noone really stepping up and speaking their mind about this. I'll take a leap of faith and ask:
Who makes a kit that is AVAILABLE right now and at what price?
Installation is not my problem, availability seems to be. I have read that RMM kits are not forth coming even though their website says they're on sale. I'm also a little confused about the SRT kit. The website says the $5k stage 1 is discontinued, but other websites offer it as available. What gives? It looks like both kits are based of totally different S/C's and totally different piping. I have also read that some people think that SRT and RMM are trying to "clearance" their existing inventory, yet people that have ordered units don't seem to be getting them at all or incomplete. I am also going to talk to a shop about making a custom turbo kit. I would rather have a bolt-on S/C instead of a custom anything to avoid tuning pit-falls.
I'm really serious about this and want serious answers. Keep your smart answers to yourself. I would like to hear from people who have either already been like me shopping this around and KNOW what's available right now or people who have experience with any kit that can shed some light on this subject.
I have read about companies in Cali and even Canada that are experimenting with FI for the GS's. I don't mind who makes it, so long as it's a quality unit and AVAILABLE. Please give me your advice.
Thanks in advance for the help. I'm going cross-eyed trying to read the info available and just want to cut to the chase. There seems to be a lot of smoke-n-mirrors about this. Let's clear it up.

I can give you some concrete answers on this, at least what I have found while searching for a SC for the past few months.
First off, SRT DOES NOT offer any Supercharger set up at this point. They discontinued the ones they used to have, and replaced them with the TT kits. They introduced a lower level TT kit that might appeal to the lost SC business, but I think that one is still around 25k.
RMM does have a SC unit available right now, they told me they have a few units left, and they ARE on sale for $4500. The reason they are on sale is exactly what you said, they are trying to move them, and they will not carry them again. The reason for this is simple, alot of poeple say they want a SC kit, RMM produced one, then few stepped up to the plate. Its simple business, its not cost productive for them to produce any longer(by the way, they are actually made by UPRD), and at this point they are just trying to recoupe some of the money put into the project.
I have heard some grumbling on the RMM SC, mostly due to the numbers it is producing, but keep in mind, this is to start with. The SC unit itself is supposed to be good for up to 15 lbs of boost, way more than what we can put into the stock internals of the GS. RMM produced a direct bolt on kit, one that they wouldnt have to worry about people blowing their engines with, and one that works off of the stock ECU..thus the low boost. You can get it with a smaller pully that will still work with the stock ecu, I think its around 8 lbs of boost. You can go from there as far as you want, I think there are a few people out there running 10 pound pulleys, with piggy back fuel management. I veiw the RMM kit as a kit that has the potential to do everything that I want it to do, just not right out of the box, but a good platform to build on.
More importantly, it is the only one available right now, that I know of anyhow. I will let you know what I think of it very soon!

Perfect! This is the type of info that I'm looking for.
Do you have a contact over at RMM I can talk to get the ball rolling? I take it from your comments that you have already been thru the ringer with a couple of these companies.
I also notice that you are probably in the process of installing this unit yourself. How long did it take to get to you? Was it complete? Was it new? I've heard the same rumors you probably have that say RMM units are not being shipped reliably. Parts missing, long delays, etc. Is this your experience?
I'm really interested in this, and am lining up the cash to do it right now. Any help from you or anyone is greatly appreciated.

I usually talk to Blair @ RMM when I call over there, he seems to be up on the whole thing. I just ordered the kit, so I cant answer most of those questions for you. I will be sure to post my feelings on the kit, experience, etc. when the time comes.

I asked a fellow @ rmm and he said not to change the pulley due to messing up your motor. I am also interested in this upgrade. Lots of money, but not as much as a ENTRY LEVEL TT KIT FOR 25K...JEEEZZ
fireball, The SC itself is a Vortech unit. Vortech makes a few different pulleys for the unit, the smaller the pulley, the more boost you have. RMM told me they originally had the unit with a 5lb pulley, they went with a low boost pulley in order to produce a worry free kit, one that they didnt have to worry too much about people blowing their engines with. After hearing some grumbling about not having enough boost with the "out of the box" kit, they started to offer a smaller(8lb) pulley with the kit for an extra $50. This pulley is supposed to be safe, and work perfectly fine with the stock ecu, and the injectors that come with the kit. Anything above that would probably need some kind of fuel management to assure that you dont run lean, and also to keep the car idling properly. I think I will be good with the 8lb pulley, but rest assured, it will not be long before I am running a smaller one with the essentials surrounding it.
MR J, Im not sure if thats how it will actually turn out, I'm just repeating what I was told by RMM...I geuss I will know soon.
Dont you, or didnt you, have a SC on your GS? If so, give us some feedback on what you had, which one, how many lbs of boost......all of those good things.
Thanks

I'm hoping that PLP will come through at some point not too far into the future. I have spoke to Mike at PLP a few times and he took a good look under the hood of my GS. He did not see any issues that he has not already dealt with on his IS3/GS3 kits. I would guess it would be at least a year before any kit was made available, though.
