I had a rear main seal leak in one of my old Pontiacs. Tried to get it fixed, but it never took for long.

Ended up carrying a gallon of oil in the car and checked it every couple of days. As long as you don't let your oil level get low for an extended period, you'll probably be OK. That is, if you don't mind the little clouds of smoke and smell of burning oil you'll get when you roll up to a stoplight when the engine is hot. Just think of it as a mini-James Bond device and you'll be cool.

That sucks. My main seal started leaking at 42K miles and was replaced under warranty. Have you shopped around for prices? I would not leave something like that for long as a small problem now could be a much larger problem later.

Wow, that sounds bad... REAL dumb question (like that's ever stopped me before) - is the main seal in the engine or in the transmission or someplace else?

AROD and redgs4 - I see you have a GS300 and GS400 respectively so I guess the problem isn't model specific.

Located at the back of the engine block dynamically sealing the spinning crankshaft.

Thanks for the reply. Yeah it's right there where the two meet. I guess I'll take the hit and get it done.
Thanks again
