my technician friend cutting the y pipe
it lines up and bolts up
the extended piece is roughly 4in long on the tail end.
remember to use new exhaust gaskets. the oem toyota ones preferred. i have some temp aftermarket ones in for the moment with a huge exhaust leak at where the header meets the pipes

diameter of piping is thicker than stock. the stock pipe is actually several different pipes welded together, the stock one has round tubing on some parts, and pressed tubes on others. i would say the stock piping at its minimum is 1 3/4in at some parts and 2in at others.
the megan one should be 2.25 to 2.5in.
its hard to tell how it sounds because the exhaust leaks are pretty bad. the car currently sounds like a neglected old ford f150 that someone uses to haul their lawn equipment around...

so update, replaced the temp gaskets with the oem crush exhaust gaskets. no more exhaust leak.
sound, even more quiet now at idle! however, on load, its more deeper tone. i would rate it as luxury stock performance, even more quiet now than with just the tanabe.. so if sound is what your after, i wouldnt do it. however, if your getting old like me, this is actually kinda welcoming.

not running headers at this point. still using the stock headers.
and it may be strange but its the truth. there isnt enough air flow at idle to have a louder exhaust. however at load, with less backpressure now, you would get that lower note.
i guess the same idea as on the s2000, if you want a quieter exhaust, you get a dual exhaust. a single outlet exhaust would yield a lot louder.
side note: at higher rpms, we talking 5500+, im noticing a high pitch ringing...

well, if i was to dig up everything i remember from physics, fluid dynamic and thermal dynamics, your better bet is to have an exhaust system that gradually gets larger in diameter with a restriction somewhere in the middle of the exhaust for maximum power gain.
as it stands, i took the car out for a rip, it still is pretty damn quiet at idle, but at wot, it does seem a bit louder. deeper tone, but also smoother tone. i was kinda hoping it would sound closer to an american v8...
maybe its just new piping, probably get louder as it smooths out the insides of the pipes.
i highly reconmend getting oem style crush gaskets. you will need 2 of the smaller ones for where the cat meets the pipes, and 1 large one for where the pipe meets the catback piping. saves you the trouble of doing it twice. aftermarket flange style gaskets w/ holes for the bolts to go through will not work, but for the week i had the exhaust leak, it sure sounded nice!
