Default How many miles to Fan Belt replacement

I had some light squeal comming from my engine on cold morning start (goes away in appox. 1 min.) and the Lexus tech determined that it is the fan belt. Well, they even said it is starting to crack. My 99 GS only has 35000 miles and I do not feel that is right. The belt should last at least 60,000 miles or on average 4 year life span.

what do you guys think?

They will not replace it under warranty and want to charge $130.00 for replacement..( do not know if that is installed or just parts). In addition, they even told me that they had replaced others at 20,000 miles. I smell BS but I could be wrong.

Upon a good visual inspection of your belt, you can determine its replacement if you see excessive stress cracks in it or the ever popular "glazing" effect on the surface of the belt.

If it's convenient, take your car to another Lexus dealer & ask them if your belt needs changing.

Hope any or all of this helps.

Belt wear (or a better term would be deterioration), is usually caused by time or age, but it can also be a direct result of environmental conditions such as light, heat, etc. or any form of accelerated oxidation. It is entirely possible that it need replacing at your mileage.

The belt can be checked visually, and there's no reason for it to be over $100.

If you are closeby to Carson (South Bay area), feel free to bring it by and we can take a look at it for you at no charge. That definitely can't hurt, and it'll only take a minute if even that.

Angry

have the same problem.
Squel on morning starts goes away after like 5 miles of driving.
Reported the problem to the Dealer which used a spray solution on the belt.
that lasted a whole week and now the squel is back.

Makes me angry.

They should replace the belt under waranty.

None of this spray some wd40 GM dealer fixes.

Sometime the service just makes me wonder.

Same thing with my drivers window.
Makes a horrible noise going up or down.
Reported to dealer. They lubed it.
The sound is back in a week.
My wife's honda doesn't make any noise and the car is a 97.

Mine is a 2000 GS400.
