I am a new GS400 owner and feel the need to undo the stock restrictive air intake! Can you help me with these options?
1- use a K&N drop in filter
2- use a K&N drop in and modify the stock air box in some way to allow in more air
3-use a RMM, Injen, or WeaponR cone-type filter w/o an ECU upgrade
4-use a SRT cone-type w/ECU upgrade
While some intake noise is fine, I don't want too much! I just want more throttle response and acceleration. Any thoughts?
Is it true that a drop-in will gain 1-3 rwhp, a cone-type 7rwhp, and a cone-type w/ECU upgrade 10rwhp? Thank you!!

If you want more throttle response and better acceleration, save up and get a torque converter. It seems to be a consensus on CL that a TC is by far the best bang for the buck when it comes to performance.
Second, if you are worried about noise, I would recommend meeting up with someone on CL that lives near you to hear how much noise their intakes make. You said a little noise is okay...what is a little noise?? Only you can judge if an intake is too loud.
IMO, you should either do the entire SRT w/ ECU or just stick with the drop in K&N drop in filter. If you are going to spend the money to get an entire intake put in, you might as well add the ECU. If I were worried about noise, I would probaby stick with the K&N drop in filter.
Thanks for the help. I think I will stay with a K&N air fiilter, but cutout part of the bottom of the stop air box and run a quasi-ram air intake through the grill near the fog light.

Just be careful of putting the intake so low and open that it sucks up too much moisture.
