Default VVTi vs. Non-VVTi 2JZGTE

I have a 2001 GS430 Im going to be doing a 2JZGTE swap on pretty soon. I was looking forward to swapping in a non-vvti motor until my wiring harness guy decided against it. He mentioned that I would lose some features.

My question is, what would be the pros and cons on going with both swaps? Are there any issues I might run into with either setup that I can fix? If so how can I fix it? I read through the thread below but it didnt quite answer all my questions.

Thanks in advance!!

Just do the Vvti mostly plug and play, putting a non Vvti get in an 01 Gs is like putting a 95 m3 motor in an 02 BMW m3. Get the picture

VVT-i > Non-VVT-i especially for newer vehicles. Do it, don't look back. There was a thread about why NOT to do a Non-VVT-i swap but I can't find it right now.

Found it: https://www.clublexus.com/forums/per...ont-do-it.html

The chassis multiplex ecu communications system is the main reason not to do it. You'll lose ac control which is the biggest problem, and cruise, ect, snow mode (you'll lose those with the vvti swap if you don't get the abs/trc/vsc ecu with the swap) and a couple other things.

If your going standalone it's no big deal to use either motor. If you use the aristo 161 engine and abs ecu's you will only lose the speed sensitive steering, as the 161 didn't have that feature. There is no control from the jdm ecu for the solenoid located at the rack. You'll still retain idle up for the power steering pump though.

Thanks guys! I'll be ordering a VVT-i 2JZ in a couple of weeks!

I have a question regarding the transmission mount. I picked up a W58 that I will be using for about a year until I can pick up a Getrag. If I mate the w58 to the 2JZ, will the tranny mount line up? If not, what will I have to do to make it work?

Haven't seen the w58 done in a gs i don't think, no reason not to, just can't remember seeing one. Usually just v16x or r154.

What year supra or sc is it from, there two variations of the w58 housing. Does it have the extended shifter tripod?

Anyone else have experience with this? If worst comes to worst I might have to get creative.

I think you're going to have to get creative. The W58 should hold basic power, as long as you have a decent clutch. Don't push too much through it until you get the getrag, which will most likely require trans tunnel modification to fit that beast under there.

Yeah the V160/161 required some tunnel massaging and the trans member will be a 100% fabricated. As the auto's/r154/w55/w58 tail ends sit on the member where as the v16x's have the mounting half way up splitting the output shaft as well as they are much taller and boxier.

A good condition W58 is a decent trans. And if you are not drag racing or banging the crap out of 1st and 2nd all the time it can be reliable with whatever you put out of some bpu'd stock twins. But the is300 w55 is considerably weaker.

Also what a 'good' clutch means to people can vary. Any combination of a strong pressure plate, pucked disc, or unsprung disc can really kill a marginal trans with the quickness.. For under 400whp I would say Just roll with a stock clutch setup. If your making so much power your killing those that fast then you should be moving to a 154/16x..

Im going to be pushing basic power on the W58 until I can get a getrag. There is no doubt about that. Ive been working with these transmissions for years. What I want to know is it the W58 tranny member will directly bolt up to the bottom of the car. If not then I will look into having a custom member made. Can someone confirm?

No, it's not a direct bolt up. You will 99% sure have to mock something up.
