Thumbs up Some great news!

This might be timely for me - just installed TC and now saving my paper route and yard-cutting money for a LSD - this sounds like it could yield a substantial savings, especially when you include installation costs.

BTW, been following (with much interest) the work you've been doing on your LS - very impressive

I agree. My 99 LS400 has 3.27 gears just like the GS400/430. I do not know if the carriers are the same or different between these cars. The Supra parts seem to be a bolt up for the GS and SC but the LS400 is a different chassis. The 95-97 LS400 (according to R&T) has a 3.62 gear. If this is accurate, I will try to locate one of these carriers and add the Powertrax to it giving a 10% torque increase with both rears powered for acceleration

Also, thanks for the props on my LS... once a gearhead, always a gearhead.

BTW, I just checked my notes that I cut and pasted from magazine sites and both the GS400 and the LS430 are listed as having limited slip???

Does ANYONE know if limited slip was an option on the GS400s? 430s??

Possible answer to the limited slip question. Reading the TRAC control info at www.lexus.com it states that:

"Traction Control (TRAC): TRAC senses impending wheelspin, then selectively applies the brakes and automatically transfers power to the driving wheel with better grip."

So...

With an open differential sending the power to the tire with the LEAST resistance... if the TRAC system applies brakes to the spinning tire the torque would shift to the other tire. This is effectively "electronic limited slip" BUT is not a performance LSD as the rate of acceleration is also being affected by reduced engine output...

Back to the Powertrax

Default WHat are the options?

Sways are in the mail, LSD is next.

So... what exactly are the options? And, what are the critical decisions that sway soemone one way or the other?

RMM full rear end unit for around $1500 + labor.

TRD LSD for around $800 thru Steve G.

Powertrax ???

Toyota Supra TT LSD (certain years only?)

Lock-up versus torque sensing?

Experts, share your knowledge, please.

Replacing the entire differential is obviously the most expensive.

I don't know but I am guessing the TRD option is just the carrier and you would install it in you housing and re-use your gears. This would require an expert that is competent to set up the lash on the hypoid gear set.

The Supra TT automatic option would be from a donor (used) car or bought new from a dealer $$$.

The Powertrax replaces the spider gears within the stock assembly. Cost is around $400+ labor of apx 2-3 hours (guessing for DIY and taking time) no special skill or tools needed. The website has a good technical write up... of course you have to consider the source
