Default MPG loss with F-Sport intake?

I'm about to pick up a F-Sport intake. Saw someone mention that MPG lowers a little with it. It got me wondering since there is a hole on the bottom of the filter box, thus sucking in hotter air into the engine so it might make sense. Anyone experience lower MPG with your F-Sport? The MPG on the IS350 is bad enough as it is. Thanks

I think its because you press the accelerator harder now. Also, you have to look at other things like, more air needs more fuel for the right stoch. ratio.

Maybe it was me mentioning about lower mpg on my IS350, but it's mainly due to my new driving habits. I currently get worse mpg because I'm opening my throttle a lot more than I usually do to hear the intake roar. If I drove normally with the intake, I'm sure my mpg would be about the same. Opening up the throttle more on a car, whether it's stock or not, will give you worse mpg.

hot air actually increase mpg because it has that much less heat to add to get it to combust,

cool air increases oxygen concentration + ecu's ability to add more fuel = more power.

So, the f-sport will likely give you better mpg and maybe not as much power all things else equal. MPG loss is, however, the direct result of mashing that gas to hear the intake growl.

It seems to me that'd only be the case if the car didn't have both a MAF and an IAT sensor (and O2 sensors on the backend to fine tune)

The ECU should adjust for both amount of air and the temp of said air. Mileage should not be impacted by an aftermarket intake if it's working properly.

If the manufacturer could measurably improve mileage with intake design they'd do that from the factory to improve their CAFE fleet average.

I do agree with you, its just that I remember the LENGTHY conversations with Lobox about this when I was building that intake and was pointed to multiple engine designs that utilize hot air to increase mpg, whereas I wanted as cold of air as possible for max power.

It goes along the same line of that stupid urban myth that hot water freezes faster than cold water. That cant possibly be the case, because energy required to freeze hot water would be far greater than the energy required to freeze nearly freezing water.

Same thing in this sense but reversed so that hot air is more easily combustible.

coincidentally or not, i'm experiencing drop in mpg as well in my 250 after the intake install. but i have been doing nothing but short distance street driving recently with a/c on, so it may not be accurate. i will know the real story when i return back to work next week.

going well but slower than I'd like. The parts are currently being 3d scanned and modeled for plastic injection and such. You wouldnt believe the amount of time it takes to find a business thats willing to do work around America. I just cant believe it really, for the economy to be so bad and have companies fail to even respond to a serious job request.

Anyway, I should have the parts and designs finished up within a week or so and then I'll go about getting these things made. It's very exciting.
