Default Yet another GTE swap question into '02

Hey guys/gals,

I've been searching/reading/taking notes all day on the swap.

I have an '02 that is in need of a new engine. Can I swap the VVT-i into my car, keeping/using a US-speed 5-speed AT to keep my e-shift functionality and ECU running OEM style, with perhaps just an FIC or MAP-ECU?

I hope it's not a duplicate question, but I've looked at so many threads today my head is spinning

TIA

What model car?
If you're going to swap a GTE into your 02, it's going to need a re-wire I believe.

Yes it can be done. I've done this on many cars, and if done right they will pass OBD-II plug in emissions/state testing. Just make sure your tuner is competent with the FIC and you'll be good to go. If you really want to use the Aristo ECU, be prepared for a MAJOR rewiring(around 100 wires or so) of the engine and body harness.

Is it the <2002 models that are easier to do GTE swaps on? That seems to be a trend that I'm noticing.

Yes, the 99-01 GS3 have the older style Toyota wiring harness that is identical to the Aristo V300. The 02+ GS3 updated to the new connectors and the Aristo V300 kept using the old connectors.

If you go GTE, can you use the stock ECU and run the engine off an FI/C?

I've been trying to get an educated answer to that question myself.

I'm also doing the GTE in my 02 in a few months. I'm still not sure if it's better to go Non-VVTI or VVTI. Either way (from what I've been researching) it's not a complete "Plug and Play" for us 02+ owners.
