Default Used Transmission Questions

I have to replace the transmission in my 98 GS400. its slipping badly between 2-3 and 3 - 4. I've found a used 98 GS transmission with 10K miles which I have verified through autocheck.com. The transmission was pulled out of a GS that had been totaled from front end damage in mid 1999. The transmission has been sitting since that time. Might there be a problem using a transmission that has been sitting for so long? Thanks!

Since posting I've talked to my mechanic and he said that as long as the transmission initially had oil in it that there wouldn't be a problem. He pointed out that rebuilt transmissions often sit for a long time before they installation. That's good enough for me.

I would think that it would take some HEAVY HEAVY damage to ruin a transmission in an accident, but I suppose anything is possible.

I would agree that most of the time a transmission can sit inside or covered off the ground with no issues. If it sat outside then contamination (rust, dirt, etc) can be a problem. Having fluid in the trans will def help. If you can inspect before picking it up put some fluid in it and sping the torque converter. Fluid should come out of the cooling lines (the torque converter drives the main fluid pump). Check the fluid to see it's condition.
